Well, to be precise, Lincoln was an abolitionist at heart. However, he was confronting one of the most vicious wars in history. I'm sure he was concerned about the huge casualty numbers. A photo of Lincoln before the war and toward the end of the war demonstrates how much he aged in just a few years. I'm not sure this is still true, but it was through the Vietnam War: more Americans died in the Civil War than all other wars combined in US History.

Thanks Pote, I was going to mention that Mike Lucovich needed a history lesson but your quote is even better.

As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln
I wasn't trying to imply that Lincoln wanted slavery, he didn't. But he would have sold blacks "down the river" if it would have kept the country from civil war.

Lincoln wasn't this great savior our public school system likes to portray his as.

He may have wanted slavery to end, but he no way believed blacks to be equal.

Last fall, I read a very good book called "Behind the Scenes" by Elizabeth Keckley who was Mrs. Lincoln's dressmaker. Ms. Keckley was kind but it was clear there was a class system, whites above blacks, in the Lincoln Whitehouse.
