Default Question about flu vax immune responses

Anyone heard of bad side effects from the flu vax?

I am curious. H1N1 caused some to be really ill with their immune response, right? So now if those who survived it, get a vax, do they get sick again?

TIA

My frail elderly mother got the special, heavy duty flu shot for elders. She has been very sick for one week now, starting 24 hours after the shot, with fevers, nightsweats, and fatigue. When I mentioned this to a friend, he said one of his friends reported being ill for 4 days after getting the flu shot. Don't know what version his friend got. He's a fellow in his late 50's.

Package inserts for flu vaccines show a multitude of side effects, including death, and yet they are marketed the same as over-the-counter drugs with no prescription needed. Why?

Because in the United States vaccines enjoy complete immunity from lawsuits in the market place. If you are injured or die from a vaccine, you or your family cannot sue the manufacturer of the vaccine. This law enacted by Congress, was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011.

Therefore, they are marketed with the same marketing techniques as any other high-profit product. With the baby boomer generation moving into their senior years, today’s seniors are seen as an especially lucrative market.

So financial incentives like discounts on other products, as CVS is doing, is quite common in order to boost vaccine sales.
Quote:
The package insert for the high-dose Fluzone flu vaccine is found here (for now).

In the section documenting adverse effects, this is what is written:

Within 6 months post-vaccination, 156 (6.1%) Fluzone High-Dose recipients and 93 (7.4%) Fluzone recipients experienced a serious adverse event. No deaths were reported within 28 days post-vaccination. A total of 23 deaths were reported during the period Day 29–180 post-vaccination: (0.6%) among Fluzone High-Dose recipients and 7 (0.6%) among Fluzone 1 recipients. The majority of these participants had a medical history of cardiac, hepatic, neoplastic, renal, and/or respiratory diseases. No deaths were considered to be caused by vaccination.

My husband would always get the flu shot and would always get sick right after it. I never took the flu shot because of that.

We both got H1N1 when it was going around.

I always got the flu shot, never had any reaction whatsoever.

Ditto this year. Had the shot a month ago.

I did hear from someone yesterday that a lot of people are out sick, But with what she didn't know.

That means more hand washings. I shop very little, though I do go out in crowds at the casino's and senior center. If there is a epidemic, that will stop very fast.

I will start washing my hands after using the computers here and at the senior center. I've avoided the library since they were dealing and using injectables in their bathrooms. Also avoided the Y for a few months as I found it depressed me.

Am sneezing now, which I seem to do early in the morning. Hope I'm not coming down with anything as I have loads of sorting out to do, and my nose is running a bit. Time to declutter, maybe I'm stirring up dust.

I am sure you know the difference between FluMist and the vax with the needle.

FluMist, did that one year just to see what it was like and never again. It is an attenuate virus, not killed virus like the needle vax.

You get sick, but just "a little".

Not having the flu in about 25 years because of the needle vax I was wrecked.

I do feel a little off with the needle vax but this year I was fine with the quadrevalent needle vax.

Officially you don't get sick with needle vax, but your body may have a reaction creating anti-bodies.

But, take my word for it. It is way better than getting the flu even if you aren't elderly or immunocompromised.

I must not be explaining myself very well.

I want to know about people who had the H1N1 Flu in 2009 and they were very sick during or after because they had inflammation/cytokine storm/their own immune system went nuts and attacked their own body.

They recovered. But it was their immune system reaction to the flu that made them feel awful from it. Weren't some in the hospital showing immune system over reactions to the flu?

But they lived.

Now, should that person take the vax for what made their immune system over react then, now?

I can see a young person who landed in the hospital from that flu being encouraged to take the Flu Mist...I wonder if any docs have even considered it could hurt and not help those people who react so strongly to that flu.

I also had H1N1 that year. Well, at that point they weren't sending off any more test to the State labs but I was in Asia at the right time and had all of the correct influenza vax for both places.

I was wrecked. Check the thread her somewhere for the details.

I have had the needle vax several times since they added H1N1 (or the sub component to it.) Little or no immunological reaction.

Small sample size I know.

Oh okay. You're right - your initial question made no sense.

I had pH1N1 - lab tested. Not horribly sick but a looooooooong recovery. The several shots I've had since haven't caused any over reaction.

I've only had a very strong reaction to a flu vax once & if memory serves me right, it was a year when the H3N2 as well as B strains were switched out. I also hadn't had the vax the previous year.

DH and I get the flu jab every year, as early as we can. But not this year. Our doc can't get any vaccine for anyone but kids. The stuff for adults and seniors is not available and hasn't been.

Anyone else not able to get the flu shots?

spinner, check with the local drugstores and Target cuz they have them out here. At least the ones for adults if not seniors. It may depend on your ins how you have to pay for it though.

I would guess it depends on each individual. In my family 3 out of 5 of us got the H1N1. (Once we knew what we had we pretty much quarantined ourselves from the other 2 and they didn't get it). I had it the worst of the 3 and my immune system did pretty much crash. I ended up getting both pink eye and shingles as a side effect of my immune system getting messed up. My husband who had the flu vaccine that year got sick but not as severely as I did and my teenage daughter was pretty sick but teens and young adults were typically hit hard. Interesting thing is I had one of the swine flu versions that hit asia back in the '60's when I was a child,(my dad was military and we were stationed in japan) so one would think I might have some extra anti-bodies but it must have been a very different version or something. I don't know if getting the vaccine will trigger an immune crash response.
If the person in question has severe health issues where the flu is worse to get than the vaccine I'd do it probably.

They have that stuff all around here. CVS, Walgreens, Kroger Pharmacy.

Sig s everywhere.

Heck when I was in Krogers they had a commercial in the music enticing you to get one while shopping.
