Default How Canada Became A Greenhouse Superpower

http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/...use-superpower

Inside one of Mastronardi Produce Sunset Grown's greenhouses,
tomato vines hang on lines that can be adjusted so that the tomatoes
are always at a height that's convenient for harvesting.

If you're a home gardener in most of the country, your tomato plants are probably just getting started. It's not even officially summer.

Yet if you go to the grocery store, you'll probably see tomatoes that come from even farther north: Canada!

Our cold-weather neighbor sends us more tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers than we send the other way. Despite all the vegetable fields of California and Florida.

When I discovered this fact, I was so shocked that I decided to investigate.
The rest at NPR.

I don't know if we have much square footage under roof producing vegetables here in Florida anymore. We did way back when I was still in the greenhouse construction business. Ornamental plants was where most of our greenhouses were put to use.

Thanks ATH .

I am interested in Hydroponics and Greenhouses as
I think the world is about to go through a cold patch which
should be apparent sometime in 2017.

I was a little surprised by the Greenhouse roof design . How much
snow weight can they carry I wonder .

No mention was made of heating methods nor introducing
extra CO2 for growth stimulation .

Would love to know more about the boxes/bags used to
contain roots . Why bags ?

I've been buying Canadian hothouse tomatoes for at keast a decade here. I know that originally they were coming from greenhouses in BC's Lower Mainland (east of Vancouver) where temps are moderate in winter, with little to no snow. I'll have to check if what I've been buying lately comes from Leamington.

Ross, I've been flirting with the idea of a greenhouse/hydroponic veggies at our new house. Mostly because it's 35 minutes to the nearest store, and there are no building restrictions. There are some neat setups I've discovered online, even for my cold winter climate.

The new LED setups are awesome, too.

I have been talking about doing this for yonks and finally ...

Today ...
# Tested a Bell siphon valve today and after a bit of screwing around
it now works very well .

# Bought 50 L of expanded clay balls as a growing medium .

I now have virtually everything I need but there are some minor
problems and probably a bit more delay ....
- It is winter
- What to grow first in a single tub as a test
- How to separate the possums from what I produce ( if anything )

I am tempted to go crazy with a zillion tubs of everything but nup,
I will test first and then go crazy .

The other thing I want to do is grow from seed in a tub using fine
misting sprays ( hydroponically ) but my problem is what kind of medium
to hold the seeds on ( some kind of cloth I think ) .
