The 'real' wealth becomes more apparent when you factor in what you pay for stuff.

US poverty level is about US$12k

That would put you at 14.5% worlds richest.

They say money is not important and does not make you happy.
True, but crying in a Mercedes Benz is more comfortable than crying on a bicycle.

Clearly one you seek donations from, since you put no one ahead of me in income, only behind me to try to guilt me into donating to CARE International.

Obviously a lot of the world is not a cash economy, and a lot of "wealth" cannot be measured in units of currency. So, it is kinda misleading. The interesting stat is how the number of folks in severe poverty in absolute terms has continued to fall, notwithstanding the rapid growth in the world's population.

After reading this thread I brought up the discussion with my 13 yo daughter and asked her what income bracket she thought we were in, and after her shock of discovery that no, we are not lower middle class, it did remind me that most children do not relate to wealth, as much as they relate to family, and friends, happiness and satisfaction. Only when they get older does the ability or inability to do or purchase something become a factor in their self worth.

An interesting study would be a happiness study vectored by age and income. I bet all levels of income begin at the same high level of satisfaction and start to diverge at age three, with older ages happiness levels becoming highly correlated with income.

Don't wrestle with a pig. The pig enjoys it and you get muddy.

Wealth has a great deal to do with family, friends, happiness and satisfaction.

The struggle to deal with the realities of a life of deprivation will rob you of the ability to have a normal life.

I agree 100%. Hence my attempted observation that, most likely, the higher the income bracket, the later in life children become aware of their relative position vs the world.

Travel does wonders for that. Our 13yo son has already been to a couple of countries with much lower living standards and incomes. A real eye opener for him.
