In and of itself, Brexit is way overblown from US perspective. Makes little to no diff to your average American how England arranges its treaties, trade and otherwise, with continental Europe.

However, people are freaking out for a more abstract, emotional, long-term reason. They think that the promise of 1 Europe was an end to the centuries of European wars. Brexit, they sense, is the pendulum swinging away from grand-unified-Europe and back to the old way, the way it was for many centuries when there were a bunch of countries in ye olde christiandom. This, they fear, means back to European wars too. I think they are probably wrong. If there is another European war, it is a very long way off.
