Charge phone w/fire
OK, and also boil water and cook food.
BioLite CampStove
Fire is awesome. It’s one of the most significant discoveries in all of human history and the ability to create it on demand makes life a whole helluva lot better. It’s a survival skill, a cool party trick and a way to start conversations with pretty girls. Fire itself hasn’t changed, well, at all since the days of the caveman, but the ways to create it have. The BioLite CampStove is the best thing to happen to fire since fire itself. The nalgene bottle sized CampStove uses no fuel. None. Pop out the aluminum legs and fill the compartment with biomass (twigs, basically) and the BioLite does the rest. Through some combination of science and sorcery, it maximizes fire efficiency, reduces waste, greens your outdoor experience AND charges your iPhone or other USB device. This is the greatest thing to happen to camping since the combination of marshmallow, graham cracker and chocolate. $129

That seems to be a popular item with campers. It is small and light and WORKS... and does not depend on sunshine (which was noticeably absent during the hurricane and for a few days after). I have seen several recommendations for them on NJ websites, post-Sandy.

Looks like a great device .
Do they wear out quickly ?
I am just in the process of packing to go camping and wish I had one
right now .

Ross, they seem perfect for camping because they are light weight. I haven't purchased one because I am not convinced they will stand up to regular use, and at $129 they are more than I want to pay for a prep item (we can charge phones in our car, and I have several ways to cook). When BioLite comes out with the home stove, I will give that serious consideration. The home stove is a nice looking rocket stove, and it has the same charging abilities, and it is made for regular use (ie, I can see myself cooking family sized meals on it for over it for a month).

thing weighs two pounds, Max power output continuous: 2W @5V,
that's less than a single night light bulb.

For $129 you can buy a lot of batteries..
If you had some 1.5volt AA batteries and a USB cable, would you be able to rig up
an external battery pack for your phone?

Cool. I read something about this some time ago. Looks like a little Peltier Seebeck device that uses the Seebeck Effect to turn heat into voltage. I'm sure it has its limitations, but like those little Peltier Effect solid state mini-refrigerators, it's a lot better than nothing.
