Wow, that's very different from my experience. Would that be the ice on the lake, or in the mountains?

I've been to fishing derbies on Lake Superior where people drive their trucks out onto the ice. It could be up to a foot thick. When it cracks, it's a very loud, bassy boom. Sounds scary, feels even worse.

That reminds me of ice fishing on lake Huron in Michigan. When it cracks, it tickles your innards because you're standing on it and there's no getting away from it. Sometimes it can get pretty intense!

That is thin ice cracking over a body of water.

You can simulate the sound by skipping a rock accross thin ice like that. It maks the same eery, echoey, pinging noise as a fracture occurring naturally.

The thicker the ice, the deeper the sound..,

The ice on lake Huron got up to 2 feet thick or more. They would post signs towards the middle that warned you of thin ice.The sounds the ice made was just eerie. I guess you had to be there to know what I mean.
