Default Non-slip rulers!

If you are a quilter in the new style, who works with rotary cutters and acrylic rulers and templates, you know that the most important thing while cutting is to keep the ruler/template from slipping. (Old-style scissors-only quilters may shudder and look away now.) Slipping leads to mis-cut and wasted fabric, and can even be dangerous to the safety of fingertips. Most of us have tried everything, even cutting on the floor while our spouse stands on the ruler, right? And nothing really works, even the spouse, because the ruler still slips, right?

Wrong. There is a product on the market that I GUARANTEE will keep your ruler from slipping. And it's a product that you've seen on TV a thousand times.

Yep. That stuff right there in the middle. Flex-Seal Clear. Walmart has it, Lowes has it, Amazon has it. All you need is a light misting on the back of the ruler. It does make the ruler look a bit frosted when you hold it up to the light, but that disappears when you put it on your fabric.

I bought it just to see what would happen. Sprayed it on the ruler that I used the least (too many lines, confusing to use) so that if the spray totally messed it up, I wouldn't feel bad about tossing it. Let it dry for a couple of hours. It worked so well that the next day I gathered up all the rulers and templates in the sewing room, including all the brand-new templates I hadn't yet used, and sprayed them too. I had some that had non-slip dots here and there on the back. They got the spray too.

There is just one small drawback. Remember that whole 'non-slip' factor? Yeah, you can't slide the ruler around on the fabric to get it in just the right place. You have to lift it up slightly and move it. But that drawback is so slight and the benefits so great that I can cope.

And your spouse will like it too. They can go back to playing on the computer instead of standing in the sewing room while you cut!

This would have been so handy while I was cutting vinyl running the sign shop.

Send in the idea to Fons and Porter and get a free subscription to their magazine for a year if they show it on their show. I don't if Sewing with Nancy does or not.

MA, did you find you had to clean it off the edges of the rulers?

Nope. I laid my rulers out on newspapers outside, touching or almost touching, so there wasn't a lot of edge showing.
