Default Gin recalled, (Canada only) for having too much alcohol

Gin recalled for having too much alcohol

Canadian health authorities have launched a nationwide recall of Bombay Sapphire gin after bottles containing nearly double the advertised amount of alcohol were discovered.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the bottles were found to contain 77% alcohol by volume rather than the typical 40%.

The company said that up to 6,000 Bombay Sapphire bottles may be affected. The 1.1 liter bottles were sold only in Canada.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned consumers to throw out the bottles or return them. It said that there were no reports of anyone becoming sick from drinking the gin.

I will (safely) dispose of all over-proof Bombay Sapphire gin for our Canadian brethren!

This is actually the second high-proof recall we've had in just a few months.

Reminds me of a story I heard.

Law enforcement one time seized a load of untaxed cigarettes from a smuggler.

The usually destruction method is just to burn the whole load.

After a year or so some authority came back to check on the case.

"Did you destroy those untaxed cigarettes?"

"Yep, one small fire at a time."

Wonder if it was shipped at that concentration and it was supposed to be watered down to the proper proof. Kind of like shipping juice concentrate and the bottler reconstitutes it.

A little known fact is that many big brands of hard alcohol (even some "single malt" scotches) start off with nearly pure grain alcohol that is produced in just a few third-party distilleries. Then it is blended and processed by the brand owner to make it into their particular liquor. Water is added for vodka, water and botanicals for gin, god-knows-what for rum, tequila and whiskey. Whiskeys and some other "dark" spirits may be put into barrels for aging, but sometimes they don't even do that. Some bourbon producers don't even do their own barrel aging. After all this is done, they put a label on it and claim it as their own.
