Default Trump stepped in it now!

President Trump asked the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, to shut down the federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo Mr. Comey wrote shortly after the meeting.

“I hope you can let this go,” the president told Mr. Comey, according to the memo.

The existence of Mr. Trump’s request is the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and F.B.I. investigation into links between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia.

...
Mr. Comey had been in the Oval Office that day with other senior national security officials for a terrorism threat briefing. When the meeting ended, Mr. Trump told those present — including Mr. Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions — to leave the room except for Mr. Comey.

Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.

Mr. Trump then turned the discussion to Mr. Flynn.

I wonder if Trump was told about the memo by other FBI agents, and that was the reason he Tweeted "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Every president since Roosevelt has recorded the Oval Office. There isn't just one recording device in the room, there are dozens - and more throughout the West Wing offices, even in the hallways.

Edited to add: Just a thought, but if Comey was making stuff up in the memos he was writing after his meetings with Trump, that may have been the reason Trump asked him if he was loyal. Comey has a lot of connections to Clinton and he was a key player along with Holder and Lynch when it came to partisan favoritism. Impartial investigations are fine, actively working against the sitting President for political reasons is not.

Has the memo even been proven to exist ?

There has been such a steady stream of fake news lately I am losing track
of that which has been confirmed as true ( assuming some has ) .

Even if true , Trump did not issue an explicit directive or a threat,
but merely expressed a ''hope'' .

If this is all they have Trump is probably enjoying the mud wallow .

A long article at this site relates Comeys history of political manoeuvring and makes
the case that he is scheming partisan snake .

No.

Quote:
NYT Journalist Behind Comey Memo Admits He NEVER Saw It
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2017...ver-saw-video/

In the video on that site, Michael Schmidt says he had been working on a story about Comey writing memos, and someone who had seen the memos recounted details to him. He claims they did some diligence on the information and felt comfortable enough to move as quickly as he could.

The same article claims:

Quote:
Schmidt has been called out for getting a story wildly wrong before thanks to his anonymous sources.
...
His boss even reprimanded him and called for “systematic changes” to the way Schmidt and Carlos Slim’s blog use anonymous sources.
1. IF there is a memo that claims Trump tried to interfere with an FBI investigation and Comey did not give them to the DoJ, not only Trump is in trouble, Comey would be in trouble too.

2. Comey is on YouTube videos testifying before Congress that no one had ever tried to interfere in an FBI investigation for political reasons. If there's a memo to the contrary either the memo is lying or Comey committed perjury.

3. IF such a memo exists, then it doesn't make sense. As I understand the timeline, Flynn had been cleared of wrongdoing by the FBI weeks before. He had been fired for lying to Pence. At the time of the meeting anything Trump could say would have been after the fact.

I suspect this story will be walked back, quietly... like the calls for impeachment have quieted down.

... and the anonymous informant has outed himself. He's not an FBI agent. He's Comey's good friend, Benjamin Wittes, editor and writer for lawfare blog.
