Thanks for the posts Treyfish. 80% pig death sounds like a full blown pig pandemic, and the dead cats and dogs suggest that more than hog cholera is to blame.

Outbreak of avian flu, central and southwestern regionsThe Department of Animal Health in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang on February 5 confirmed bird flu in 700 free-range water-fowl in My Xuyen District.

Two month old ducks had previously been vaccinated against the disease. Veterinarians culled all poultry and disinfected the affected area to prevent the disease spreading.

As the duck breeder, Tran Van Han, in Gia Rai had 29 ducks that died from bird flu symptoms, the Department of Animal Health in the neighboring province, southwest of Soc Trang, Bac Lieu destroyed 270 ducks and veterinarians took samples for tests.

Ca Mau Province in the southern tip of Vietnam, authorities are worried that the spread of bird flu maybe out of control.

The People’s Committee issued instructions to cull diseased poultry and any chickens with symptoms of avian influenza, not waiting for tests.
By February 5, nearly 3,000 poultry in Thoi Binh District presented symptoms of the disease.

It is a big challenge for veterinarians in the Mekong delta provinces of Ca Mau, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu as bird flu occurred in flocks of water-fowl raised in free-range conditions.

Inspectors from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Animal Health fined 166 people for the sale of live poultry and smuggling of water-fowl into the city. Unsafe poultry, including 600 cocks, 180 ducks, 544 dead poultry, 350 birds and over 22,000 eggs, have been destroyed.

Bird flu has not only occurred in southern Vietnam but in the center as well. The Department of Animal Health in the central province of Nghe An and local administrators culled 380 ducks in Do Luong District.

The farmer’s, Nguyen Van Hung, flock of water-fowl died between January 31 to February 3 and samples tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu strain. 3,000 dozes of vaccine against H5N1 and 60 liters of chemicals have been earmarked for sterilization of the area.

In related news, director of the Department of Animal Health in Section III Duong Tat Thang confirmed tests showed that swine of farmer Nguyen Thai Huy and his neighbors died of cholera, not of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, commonly known as blue ear.

Eperythrozoonosis
This is a disease caused by a bacterium called Eperythrozoonosis suis which attaches to the surface of red blood cells and sometimes destroys them. The pig may then become anaemic and the products left after the destruction of the cells may cause jaundice. Clinical disease is more commonly seen in young growing pigs. However it can also cause reproductive problems in the breeding herd. A sow may carry Epe and yet remain quite healthy, however, it can cross the placenta resulting in weak pale pigs at birth.
Epe is present in most if not all herds but the mechanisms which allow it to become pathogenic and produce disease in some populations and not in others are unknown. The incidence of disease is low.

Symptoms
Sows
Acute disease:

Affected sows are inappetent with fever 40-42?C (105-107?F) when high numbers of organisms are present in the blood. This clinical picture is often seen after farrowing.
Anaemia
Increased respiration.
Anoestrus.
Pale skin
No milk - agalactia.
Chronic disease:
Sows become debilitated and pale with jaundice.
Poor conception, repeat matings and anoestrus.
Delayed returns to oestrus.
Anaemia.
Jaundice.
Bleeding into tissues.
Abortion.
Thin sows.
Stillbirths.
Reduced conception rates.
Pale skin
No milk -agalactia.
Piglets
In severe cases jaundice may result.
Secondary infections tend to occur.
More chronic cases result in slow growth and poor-doing pigs.
Pale and anaemic pigs.
Increased scour (sloppy diarrhoea).
Pneumonia.
Weaners & Growers
The clinical picture varies:

In weaners the acute disease is manifest by primary anaemia.
In growers it leads to slow growth and poor-doing pigs.
The presence of anaemic and possibly slightly yellow-skinned recently weaned pigs.
Pale pigs.
Slow or variable growth.
Ear necrosis.
Enteritis - sloppy diarrhoea.
Fever.
Pneumonia.
Poor pigs, wasting, hairy.
Pot bellied pigs.
Scour.
Causes / Contributing factors
Biting insects.
Internal parasites
Lice or mange mites.
Cannibalism / vice (Abnormal behaviour).
Sows method of spread:
Vaccinating sows with the same needle.
Tagging gilts.
Feeding placenta or farrowing house material.
Fighting.
Vulval and tail biting etc.
Piglets - method of spread:
Tailing, tooth clipping and iron injections.
Weaners & Growers method of spread
Fighting.
Tail biting and other vices.
Diagnosis
In trying to arrive at a diagnosis, the following should be considered.
The clinical picture.
The identification of the organism in blood smears stained with Wright's stain. Fifty microscopic fields should be examined before a negative diagnosis is arrived at. The presence of Epe in a smear need not necessarily imply disease.
Serological tests, including an ELISA, are still unreliable but are being improved.

Evidence of other causes of anaemia (e.g. iron/copper deficiency).

Examination of blood samples for packed cell volume and haemoglobin levels.
Epe must be differentiated from the following:
- Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia.
- Chronic respiratory disease complexes with PRRS and influenza.
- Gl?ssers disease - Haemophilus parasuis.
- Leptospirosis (L. icterohaemorrhagiae).
- Malabsorption and chronic enteritis.
- Pale piglet syndrome - haemorrhages.
- Porcine enteropathy (PE, NE, PHE and PIA).
- Post weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)
- Other causes of anaemia (e.g. Iron / copper deficiency).

Maybe the pigs were not dying of FMD in 1918 as believed. Maybe it was Epe.

....Taiwan authorities, along with the island’s hog industry, faced a
dilemma. Farmers and meat processors wanted to kill all the
hogs and start over. But for several reasons, the Council of
Agriculture (COA)—Taiwan’s equivalent of the U.S. Department
of Agriculture—recommended controlling the disease by vaccinating
healthy hogs at disease-free farms. First, with about
100,000 people raising hogs and 700,000 in related businesses,
and with 11 million hogs in stock before the outbreak, destroying
the entire hog population would seriously impact the island
economically, socially, and politically, and carry a substantial
environmental cost of disposal. Second, given that the last
recorded FMD outbreak had occurred in 1918, it seemed highly
possible that the disease had come from abroad. If that were
true, destroying the domestic hog population might not prevent a
reinfection.
Taiwan’s legislature on March 25 adopted COA’s
recommendation: exterminate all hogs at FMD-contaminated
farms and inoculate uninfected animals.....

Vietnam-Foot and Mouth disease and Bird Flu.

VIET NAM - Bird flu and foot-and-mouth diseases have hit some localities, according to the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Veterinary Department has confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in northern Hoa Binh province. Livestock, including 2 cows and 24 buffaloes in Cun Pheo commune, Mai Chau district, tested positive for the virus.
As of February 5, the country has had four provinces infected with foot-and-mouth disease: Long An (less than 19 days), Kon Tum, Son La and Hoa Binh (all less than 21 days).
Effective measures are being taken to curb the spread of the disease in these provinces.

Infected Pig Meat Risks Your Life

Maneka Gandhi

(Bihar Times) Is ebola, which I wrote about last week, the only disease that pigs are currently suffering from? No. As I write this, a highly infectious swine virus is sweeping China’s pig population. The mysterious virus — believed to cause an unusually deadly form of an infection known as blue-ear pig disease, (which is also known as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome — has spread to 25 of this country’s 33 provinces . The Chinese are again attempting to keep this secret as they did the SARS epidemic of 2002 and Bird Flue and the milk contamination but this one has the immunologists really worried. The Chinese have not allowed any samples to be sent outside for testing to any international body like WHO or FAO. Who knows how much of a human threat it poses.

The only thing the Chinese government acknowledges is that the current virus has devastated pigs in coastal and southern areas and is rapidly moving inland and westward.

No one knows for sure how many of this country’s 500 million pigs have been infected. The government says officially that about 165,000 pigs have contracted the virus this year. But in a country that, on average, loses 25 million pigs a year to disease, few believe the figures. Pork prices have skyrocketed 85% in the last year — an increase that suggests the losses from disease are more widespread than Beijing admits.

International health experts fear the fast-mutating pathogens could spread to neighboring countries, igniting a worldwide epidemic .A similar virus has already been detected in neighboring Vietnam and Myanmar. China exports pork as well.

Is ebola or blue ear virus the only problems that you might get from pork ? Swine fever is one of the most important virus diseases of pigs. The virus is spread from infected or carrier pigs via discharges from the nose, mouth, urine and feces or infected semen and it is highly contagious. The virus survives in frozen carcasses for long periods of time. Classical swine fever is a rapid spreading disease with high mortality. The dead bodies show bloody lymph nodes, dead patches in the spleen, multiple small hemorrhages in the kidneys and "button ulcers" in the gut Rotavirus, coronavirus and coccidia which causes Coccidiosis are important viruses, The last causes diarrhea with blood in it and is caused by wet dirty floors. Then there is Escheria coli or E Coli , a virulent bacteria which comes from overcrowding, contaminated feed and feeding equipment. Affected pigs exhibit watery feces and wet tails. They become emaciated and dehydrated. In some cases, the infection may develop so rapidly that death occurs before diarrhea is evident.

Swine dysentery , is caused by a bacterium that causes a severe inflammation of the large intestine with a bloody mucous diarrhea and is common . The survivors will be stunted and can come down with the disease again.

Sarcoptic mange known as pig scabies is caused by a mite which burrows under the skin. Skin lesions usually start around the head but can progressively spread over the whole body. Chronic mange can develop. The pig rubs and thickens its skin and develops crusts in the ears.

Another common disease is gastric ulcers , lesions found in the stomach of more than 50 % of pigs. In large piggeries , this is one of the most frequent causes of death.

Most herds are infected with arthritis . The bacterium is spread by droplet infection and causes lameness and swelling.
Atrophic Rhinitis which is an inflammation of the tissues inside the nose is very common in all pig herds.

Brucellosis is a disease is caused by the bacterium Brucella suis and is widespread through most of the pig rearing world. It is an important disease not least because it can be transmitted to people where it can cause serious illness. A carrier state persists for long periods of time. The symptoms are Infertility, abnormal oestrus , abortions , lameness , swollen/ painful testicles . The bacteria can survive outside the pig for long periods of time

In 1997 Hepatitis E was found in pigs' livers. Tapeworms exist in all pigs and easily find their way to humans – no matter how you cook the meat. Every pigs carries large white tape worms , red stomach worms, thread worms and whip worms. Pigs can also get ring worm which can be passed to humans. The symptoms of a worm infection are coughing , vomiting, blood in faeces ,anaemia and diarrhoea.

These are a few of the 143 diseases carried by a normal pig raised for meat. They have been selected at random – there are many that are much more frightening.

Most farmers and piggery owners kill their pigs when they get a serious illness instead of treating them with medicines which are costly. The meat is then sold to you. Every time you eat pork or bacon, you will definitely get meat which has one or the other of these diseases – if not all of them. What these viruses mutate into in your body is unknown – and governments like China and America will not let it be known as their meat industries are far too powerful for politicians to buck them. In other countries , specially India, there are no checkers, no checking laboratories, no interest at all in what the meat animal carries to the human. No one cares what you die of – including you. The animal husbandry department exists to simply increase the quantity of meat eaten , not the quality. Every time our exported meat is caught with some disease, the government sermonizes the industry for a bit but since no checks are put at any point, these sermons are disregarded.

Are you sure you want to risk your life ?

Philippines-Cholera in Pigs.

THE PHILIPPINES - An outbreak of cholera killed at least 240 pigs in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato, a health official reported yesterday.

The outbreak was detected in the remote villages near the Malitubog River in the townships of Alamada, Aleosan, and Midsayap, according to Dr. Enrico Garzon, a local veterinary officer.

Garzon said hog traders and raisers in the region have been informed of what they would do to counter the disease.

"We suspect contaminated water caused the outbreak," Garzon said.

Also known as Classical Swine Fever (CSF), hog cholera is a contagious disease transmitted through direct contact between healthy swine and infected swine.

Local officials warned people against eating meat from infected animals, as antibiotics used to cure them could be harmful to human beings.

The cholera broke out months after health officials found a strain of Ebola virus among hogs at some northern farms in the country. It was the first time in the world that the Ebola virus was found on the swine, a food-producing animal category.

Last month, the Philippine health authorities also reported that three pig farm workers and a slaughterhouse worker have been found infected with the Ebola-Reston virus.

Ebola-Reston, unlike its African counterparts which are proven deadly to humans, was first found on monkeys shipped from the Philippines to Reston, Virginia, the United States in 1989.

Hog diseases hit 18 towns in Easterm Visayas
By Miriam Desacada Updated February 11, 2009 10:19 AM

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines - Agriculture officials in the region reported that hog diseases have spread to 18 towns and one city in Eastern Visayas this month and affected thousands of backyard hog raisers in the region.

DA regional executive director Le Cañeda said that unrestricted slaughtering of sick animals has triggered the spread of swine diseases to new areas. The Bureau of Animal Industry has not yet confirmed other diseases -- other than salmonella infection -- as laboratory tests on new samples are still ongoing.

"If we’re able to arrest the slaughter of sick animals, this could be prevented,” Cañeda said during the meeting of the Regional Advisory Council and Animal Disease Control and Emergency yesterday.

The agriculture department has received reports of hog mortalities and early slaughtering from Babatngon, Tacloban City, Alangalang, Sta. Fe, Palo, Pastrana, Dagami, Burauen, Tabontabon, Lapaz, Mayorga, and Abuyog in Leyte; Sogod in Southern Leyte; Catbalogan, Calbiga, Daram, and Sta. Rita in Samar; and Lope de Vega in Northern Samar.

“There were reports and observations but the thing is samples have not been drawn yet. Until such time that samples has been submitted for testing and examination, this observation will remain as it is,” Cañeda said.

There were speculations that the diseases could be salmonella, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome or hog cholera.

Latest report showed that in Sta. Rita town, there were actual hog deaths due to salmonella while 772 others were infected. The reported nearly 300 mortalities include those that were slaughtered.

In Lope de Vega town, 77 animals have died while 37 others were slaughtered in three villages. At least 137 were infected by a disease, according to Jose Luis Acompañado, chief of Northern Samar provincial veterinary office.

“The local government unit has issued memorandum to ban the slaughter and transport of sick animals in affected areas,” Acompañado added.

Antonio Cinco, chief of the veterinary office in Catbalogan, Samar, disclosed that an unknown disease has killed 15 backyard-raised pigs in the capital town of Samar province. At least 23 infected animals were slaughtered by raisers.

“The spread of the disease was caused by overcrowding, stray pigs, slaughtering and improper disposal of carcasses,” Cinco said.

According to DA, the extended rainfall has triggered the animal sickness. Thus, agriculture officials will strictly implement “control and preventive measures” to stop the disease from infecting healthy animals.

These measures include prohibiting the movement of infected stocks to other areas, isolating sick animals from the healthy ones, banning the slaughter of sick animals, proper and immediate disposal of dead animals, thorough cleaning of infected areas and putting up checkpoints in strategic places.

“We will continue information drive, surveillance and monitoring of the disease situation until the infection has been effectively contained,” Cañeda added.

China Again Dealing with Blue-ear Disease
By Pork news staff | Wednesday, February 11, 2009

The Chinese government has to be nervous about recent reports that blue-ear disease has surfaced and caused the recent deaths of 1,056 pigs in Hongdong County in north China's Shanxi Province. The animals belonged to 65 households in 10 villages. About 80 percent of the dead animals were less than one month old, reports the Xinhua News Agency.

For clarification, what's called blue-ear disease in China is referred to as porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome in Europe, North America and elsewhere in the world. There are many different strains of the virus and they can have various effects on pigs throughout the entire production cycle. The reality of the disease is that it requires much attention, effort and strong biosecurity protocols to prevent and manage it.

Investigators went to the scene last weekend to conduct autopsies and collect tissue samples for laboratory diagnosis at the Shanxi provincial center for animal disease control and prevention. The disease was confirmed on Monday.

In 2007, China dealt with widespread outbreaks of blue-ear disease, and ultimately cut into it's pork supply. Pork is the country's most consumed meat. It resulted in record amounts of pork imports last year from the United States and elsewhere.
The Chinese government has since moved forward in prioritizing pork production within the country. It is funding incentives to rebuild the hog and pork supply and expand large hog operations.

Traditionally, and still predominantly today, China has been a country of backyard pig farmers, with much of the population raising just a few hogs.

Cholera kills hundreds of pigs in Ha Tinh
An additional of 200 pigs were found dead in hamlet 4, Cam Quan commune, Cam Xuyen district in the central province of Ha Tinh, said Nguyen Thanh Binh, head of the provincial Animal Heath Agency, on Feb. 12.

Samples taken from the dead pigs tested positive for the cholera bacteria. So far, the disease has killed more than 600 pigs in the locality.

The local authorities are sterilising the infected areas and taking effective measures to prevent the cholera bacteria spreading.
*** Long An free from foot-and-mouth disease
A foot-and-mouth disease epidemic has been stamped out in the districts of Chau Thanh and Tan Tru in the southern province of Long An, the provincial people’s committee announced on February 13.

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease was detected recently among 90 cows and buffalos in the province. The outbreak is attributed to the fact that while carrying out a breeding project to help poor households, the provincial women’s association did not work with the animal health agency to guard against the disease.

The local authorities culled 26 cows from nearby households and an additional 60 cows from the breeding project, causing losses of nearly VND1 billion.

Mussel breeders bankrupt, crop decimatedHundreds of farmers in Tan Dao Commune, Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province, are suffering huge losses as thousands of tons of Asian green mussel died during the Tet holidays. The leading cause of death has not yet been discovered.

Farmers going bankrupt
A farmer stands stands next to a pile of dead mussels

Located in Tan Dao Hamlet, Nha Phu lagoon is famous for its wide range and large reserves of maritime species. Tan Dao has around 200 households, over 50 percent of which depend on breeding green mussels for their livelihood.

Sitting on the bank of a pond beside a large pile of mussel shells, Pham A, a local breeder, sadly said that his mussels began to die just one day before the Lunar New Year began. At the beginning of the crop, his family had borrowed over VND30 million ($1,700) from the bank to invest in the breeding farm.

If a kilo of mussel was sold at VND 4,000, said A, his family would have earned a profit of between VND40 – 50 million (US$2,288- 2,860) after clearing the bank loan. But now, the death of the mussels has brought his family to the verge of bankruptcy.

According to Mr. Tran Chang, head of the Commune, mussel breeding has helped many families in Tan Dao escape poverty for several years now.

For each crop, most families in the commune invest at least VND20 million (US$1,144) in breeding farms, some make investments of up to VND300 - 400 million ( US$17,162- 22,883). Thanks to profits gained from mussel breeding, local farmers can not only afford their kids’ schooling but also build brick houses and buy motorbikes.

Chang said, “Now the local farmers have nothing. It is estimated that over 4,000 tons of green mussels, worth VND16 billion (US$915,331), are dead. How can the farmers here repay the debts to the banks, no one knows.”

Why did the mussels die?

This is the first time mussels in Nha Phu lagoon have suffered such massive destruction.
Local farmers said that the mussels raised in breeding farms located near the dumping area of Viet Thang Pig Farm died first. The pig farm was built three years ago and breeds thousands of pigs.

Viet Thang has dug a large pond running parallel with the sea bank to contain wastewater from the pig farm and built a long 5 cm high dyke to prevent the wastewater from overflowing from the pond into the sea. Since the dyke is not high enough to prevent high tide from overflowing into the wastewater pond water, the ebbing tide carries wastewater into the sea day after day.

The quality of water used to be very clear and clean but now has an all pervading, disgusting smell. Lying under the water and right at the foot of the dyke is a 1-m thick layer of black mud.

Some local farmers asserted that two underground drainages, with diameters between 25 – 30 cm, built by Viet Thang to discharge wastewater into the sea are uncovered after the tide has receded every morning.

The Research Institute for Aquaculture No 3. has taken samples at three different places for analysis. One was at a mussel breeding farm in the commune, another near the dumping pond of Viet Thang and the other near the crocodile farm nearby. Tests found organic and sediment pollution levels near Viet Thang’s dumping pond to be many times higher than permissible levels.

A preliminary conclusion made by the Institute for the death of the mussels, said that the culprit for the massive loss may be poor hygiene conditions in breeding farms. It said that local farmers did not wash their farms for years to get rid of mussels’ waste. It accumulated and has caused pollution in the breeding environment.

Another culprit may be the level of dissolved oxygen at breeding farms, which had been affected by the cold spell hitting Khanh Hoa Province before Tet. Dissolved oxygen is another important water quality factor for maritime species.

Pig organs make 46 ill in China
Feb 20, 2009
Forty-six people in China's southern province of Guangdong have suffered food poisoning after eating pig organs that contained an animal feed additive, the official Xinhua news agency says.

All those who fell sick had eaten pig organs, said Wang Guobin, an official with the Guangzhou Municipal Public Health Bureau. Initial investigations showed the organs were contaminated with clenbuterol.

The chemical can stop pigs accumulating fat and can be used by humans as a weight loss aid and to help ease breathing disorders. It is banned as an additive in pig feed in China.

China has launched a crackdown on tainted food following the deaths of at least six babies last year from drinking formula milk contaminated with melamine, a toxic industrial compound.

Blue-ear pig disease found in Quang Ninh
Blue ear pig disease has broken out in Yen Hai commune, Yen Hung district, Quang Ninh province, making 75 pigs sick.

Four out of five samples, which were taken to the animal health centre in Hai Phong City, tested positive for the blue ear pig disease virus.

The pigs belonged to 22 households in Yen Hung district. The local authorities have demanded all sick pigs be culled, and the affected areas sterilised, while tightening control of the transportation and trading of pig products.

As of February 19, there have been outbreaks of 3 dangerous diseases detected, including bird flu (in Dam Ha district), foot-and-mouth disease (in Hai Ha district) and now blue ear pig disease (in Yen Hung district).

Quang Ninh is conducting an information campaign and intensifying measures to detect and stop the spread of the diseases before they get out of control.

Foot-and-mouth disease found in Taiwan
Export of raw pork to Singapore suspended after foot-and-mouth outbreak; more than 600 pigs slaughtered

Taiwan stopped the export of 90 tons of pork to Singapore after discovering two sporadic cases of foot-and-mouth disease in the central part of the island more than a week ago, the Council of Agriculture announced yesterday.

Symptoms of the highly contagious viral disease were found at two separate farms in the counties of Yunlin and Changhua earlier this month. The outbreaks delayed Taiwan's opportunity to apply for the status of foot-and-mouth-disease-free country to mid-2011 from March 2010, the COA said.

Taiwan was planning to export four containers of pork valued at NT$8 million to Singapore next week, but the Southeast Asian country called a halt to the deal, the COA said. Exports of cooked pork products to Japan and the Philippines could still go ahead.

Taiwan used to export 7 million pigs per year to Japan, out of an annual total of 12 million animals raised. The latter amount dropped to 6.4 million a year after a 1997 outbreak which caused NT$170 million in losses.

On Feb. 4, a small farm in Yunlin County reported that 15 pigs had developed blisters on mouths and feet, a symptom of the disease, the COA's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine reported late Wednesday. Authorities proceeded to cull all 68 pigs on the farm the following day.

The Yunlin County Government said yesterday no new cases of the disease had been reported at the Mailiao farm in the two weeks since the outbreak.

Similar symptoms were found with 23 hogs at a much larger farm in neighboring Changhua County on Feb. 9, leading to the destruction of 609 animals being raised under the same roof. Another 5,503 pigs at the same farm received injections against foot-and-mouth disease, officials said.

A total of 75 pig farms within a radius of three kilometers from the two affected plants were being closely monitored, the authorities said.

The strain of the disease found in the latest incidents was similar to an outbreak in 1997, meaning they posed no threat to humans, BAPHIQ said. None of the affected animals had been vaccinated against the disease under rules set by the World Organization for Animal Health, the OIE, officials said.

Angry pig farmers from Central Taiwan showed up outside the offices of the United Daily News in Taipei yesterday to protest the Chinese-language newspaper's reporting.

The paper's yesterday edition used a photograph from a previous outbreak on its front page, making the recent sporadic cases look worse than they really were, protesters said. Government spokesman Su Jun-pin said Premier Liu Chao-shiuan told the regular weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday to pay close attention to the problem, but insisted the situation was under control and consumers should not be afraid of buying pork.

Default PRRSV, FMD, and Bird FLu

Vietnam records first bird flu death in a year
Hundreds of free-range ducks at a pond in the central province of Binh Dinh. Health authorities have warned such practices render the area vulnerable to a bird flu epidemic.

Vietnam Saturday registered its first bird flu fatality since March 2008 as 23-year-old Ly Tai Mui of Quang Ninh Province succumbed to the virus.
Mui, a resident of Dam Ha District, was admitted to the Quang Ninh General Hospital on February 3 with high fever, low blood pressure, and severe respiratory problems.
Five days later, doctors confirmed she had been infected with the H5N1 virus, the deadly strain of avian flu.

Doctors say she failed to respond to treatment and her condition worsened steadily. She died after 18 days of treatment in the hospital.

The body of Mui was sent to her hometown Saturday.

Quang Ninh, where the world renowned Ha Long Bay is located, is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Hanoi.

Quang Ninh provincial authorities also said Saturday that another local commune has been hit by bird flu, bringing the total so far to three communes this year.
Three bird flu cases have been reported over the last two months, including that of Mui.

The Ministry of Health reported the latest case last Monday after a 32-yearold man from the northern province of Ninh Binh tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

An eight-year-old girl from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa recovered after several days of treatment in the hospital, but her elder sister had died weeks earlier without being tested for the virus.

Mui is the 53rd person to die of avian flu in Vietnam since 2003, the world's second highest toll after Indonesia, where the virus has killed 115 people.

The H5N1 avian influenza virus mainly kills animals but scientists fear it could mutate and easily spread among human beings, sparking a global pandemic.

Last year, sporadic outbreaks of H5N1 were reported in 27 provinces in Vietnam. Five people were reported to have contracted the virus, and all of them died.

In 2007, eight human cases were reported, five of which were fatal.

So far this year, at least 10 Vietnamese provinces have reported bird flu outbreaks: Ninh Binh, Bac Ninh and Quang Ninh in the north; Nghe An, Quang Tri and Khanh Hoa in the central region; and Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau in the Mekong Delta.

A province is considered bird-flu hit if it is affected by the epidemic for at least 21 days.

On Friday, the Animal Health Bureau reported that blue ear disease has infected 150 pigs in the central province of Quang Nam and 65 others in Quang Ninh Province’s Yen Hai Commune.

The blue ear disease, also known as the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), causes appetite loss, high fever, premature birth, miscarriage, respiratory problems, and death in extreme cases.

Seven northern and central provinces have reported outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease.

Foot-and-mouth is a highly contagious disease affecting animals with divided hooves. Upon infection, the animal develops ulcers in the mouth and near the hooves.

Health officials are worried that though livestock diseases are spreading nationwide, people have yet to realize the seriousness of the problem and are not taking due precautionary measures.

Chicken and poultry products are still being sold in large quantities in many affected provinces despite a ban. Many sellers said they did not care about the diseases or understand how dangerous they are.
