Default why China ?

remember Webster in Denver in May ?

I think, it's the domestic ducks, the duck-farming, which you only see in China.
Mallards get all the waterfowl strains. And domestic ducks also get the chicken strains
and they reassort them.

The NA gene of the novel H7N9 virus isolates shared highest homology (97.3.9%)
with NA genes from H4N9 or H11N9 influenza viruses isolated from ducks,
and environmental samples from duck farms, located in the Dongting Lake region.

so, what kind is this domestic duck farm business in China ?
Does it exist in other countries ?

domestic ducks could be the "mixing vessel" between mallards and chickens

waterborne in mallards (dabbling)
respiratory or foodborne in domestic ducks ?

some poultry segments have come in, (or evolved ?) i.e. segments 5,8

N9 has 23 nucleotide differences to H7N9 and not the deletion. --> common ancester ~3 years ago

4 are H5N1, one of those with a new segment 7

10 more share segments 1 and 8 with H5N1
3 more share segment 8 only

Part of the reason is that it is utterly filthy. The things I have seen in some of the wet markets would make your head spin.
