Years ago when I lived in southern CA, I had a friend who's parents had build a 'granny pod' onto their existing home. It was accessed via it's own entrance and from a short hallway off the main house.

Basically it was a massive studio type apartment with small kitchen, huge main room, sleeping nook and a bath that was specifically designed for easy access by a wheelchair (if ever needed) ---- The greatest thing about it, to me, was the wrap around porch / deck that over looked the bay ... That and my friends granny was a very cool, very engaged lady who had lead a pretty wild life, traveled a great deal and was simply so alive and in love with life. Living in that granny pod let her have freedom to come and go as she wished but also gave her daughter and SIL peace of mind, that she wasn't alone, if she ever needed help.

But building a separate structure might pose problems regarding zoning, lot limitations and such .... Still a cool option if one has the money. And so much better than either staying in a home that is cumbersome and so much better than most facilities.

It adds another, (albeit high end), option to the growing issues of senior care. Independence rocks & the longer it can be kept to some degree, the better for the seniors involved.

I liked the idea with the rubber floors. I sort of wish other nursing homes would do that. It might save a lot of broken hips.
