Exclamation Reminder for your flu shot

It's that time of the year again. Everybody is thinking about Ebola, but don't forget to get your flu shots before the flu finds you.

I got mine today.

H3N2 is predominating in Canada & although it's early, it's hitting hard. I know 2 people who already have ended up with pneumonia & they're not elderly.

Got mine the first of October........ But IIRC heard that this years vaccine isn't the best match for the bug that's floating around. Either way, better to have some protection than none.

NV - Health Canada was upfront about that. Once they got the first few positive lab results for flu typing, they tested for vaccine efficacy & found it wasn't a great match this year. In their words, more or less; it's providing SOME protection. You may not get H3N2 at all or if you do, it will be much milder.

I cannot tolerate the flu vaccine, but having experienced pneumonia in the past couple of years I can tell u that is surely no treat! (No one ever told me how incredibly painful pneumonia is ....)

I'll be wearing the blue mask at work for the duration. Now, if we could just get visitors to wear them, too!

No flu shots during chemo. I'll see what my WBC is (from yesterday's blood draw) and make a decision early next week.

I've never had a pneumovax, as you only get it once, (or twice), depending on age.

Aside from getting so run down I must have suppressed my immune system, I really don't have any of the risk factors for pneumonia:

Pneumonia can affect anyone. But the two age groups at highest risk are:

Infants and children younger than age 2 years, because their immune systems are still developing
People older than age 65
Other risk factors include:

Certain chronic diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart disease
Weakened or suppressed immune system, due to factors such as HIV/AIDS, organ transplant, chemotherapy for cancer or long-term steroid use
Smoking, which damages your body's natural defenses against the bacteria and viruses that cause pneumonia.

In fact, before that getting sick wasn't my norm.

I've had yearly flu shots and 2 pneumovax.

Outside of a reaction to antibiotics for a urinary track infection, (sick as a dog) and one attack of an irritated pancreas, I can't say I've had any major or viral illnesses in years.

Keeping fingers crossed for the winter. Outside of bones and joints being obviously old and achey, and a needed cortisone shot now and then I feel I've been pretty lucky healthwise.

Simply make sure you get a vax made by another manufacturer.

I'll check Health Canada - the rare times there have been any issues with yearly vax, they're all over it & warning the public.

Usually I have a couple of days of fever after getting mine, but I was fine this year. Just a bit tired and grumpy the next day.

In checking the internet, I found this about the CDC and this years' flu vaccine, Flu Vaccine Apology Issued By CDC
"If you had a flu vaccine recently, you shouldnt be surprised if you still get sick.

The CDC says the flu vaccine is less effective this year as the current virus has mutated. In an advisory to doctors, the CDC said the flu virus samples taken from October 1st through November 22 showed just under half, 48%, matched the current influenza strains in this year’s vaccine. Fifty-two percent of the samples were different, indicating a mutation or drift of the strain the CDC said, but still urged people to have their shots."

I am late getting the flu vaccine this year. I have been waiting for my local Costco to get the high dose for "Seniors" vaccine in stock. I just checked and their backorder has been filled and they have "Flu-Zone" available now. However, after googleing the high dose Senior vaccine, I will probably opt for the regular flue vaccine this year. The potential side effects of the new high dose vaccine for Seniors do not sound good. We will know more about this vaccine in a year or two.

I wanted the enhanced flu vaccine for seniors, but both times I stopped for the shot they didn't have it, and I wanted to get it early in the season. So I got the ordinary shot.

I am so glad I saw this first thing today, it reminded me to call and make an appointment for DH. He gets to get his shot for a birthday present. Next Monday afternoon he gets it.

I got my first ever &%$#$ flu shot on Tuesday. I had a slight head cold, nothing major, and after practically forcing me into agreeing to the damn shot, I asked my new doctor if I should wait until after my head cold was cleared up. He said it was no big deal.

Now I have a major chest cold going on. My flipping ribs hurt from coughing so much, and I had to cancel my physical therapy today on my shoulder injury (which is why I went to the doctor in the first place) because I am so blasted sick. $#@#%^ flu shot!

(Andrea crawls off toward the recliner, reeking of garlic and vicks, and covered in snot and phlegm.)

Andrea - I'm so sorry to read that. I made the same mistake one year & ended up paying the same price. A minor head cold turned into a massive production line quantity snot run & utter misery. On only one other occasion did I ever have a bad reaction to a shot - it really kicked my immune system hard & for a day, I would have sworn I had the flu.

Every other year though - barely even a mark & no worse than a slightly sore arm for a few days.

Hopefully NOT related..,

I got my shot this year on Oct 17. Had the pneumo-vax three years ago. I should be good on that one for at least 10 years..,

I hope you are feeling better soon Andrea..,

I wonder, What would George Carlin say about people who wait until
they're coming down with the flu to get their flu shot?

that's scary.
