Default Turkey- NYE nightclub shooting, 35+ dead - Dec. 31, 2016

Very little info yet, but apparently many injured in a gun attack at an Istanbul nightclub. Still developing. Possibly two shooters.

And so it begins.

AP is reporting that police have cordoned off a 2 sq. mile area around the club. The AP reporter on scene notes seeing "multiple ambulances" heading to the hospital. NTV is reporting that there may be more than one assailant. But I think there's still too much fog of incident for anyone to know for sure.

BREAKING NEWS: Gunman dressed as Santa kills 35 and injures 40 when he opens fire on Istanbul nightclub crowd

The gunmen appear to be wearing Santa costumes in CCTV footage

The pair opened fire in the Reina nightclub, one of Istanbul's most popular venues

Several people are feared dead in the New Year's Eve attack

An estimated 17,000 police officers are believed to be on duty tonight in Istanbul

Thirty five people have been killed in an armed attack in an Istanbul nightclub, the city's governor has revealed.

The gunman, believed to have been dressed in a Santa costume, opened fire inside the Reina nightclub in Istanbul's Ortaköy district, where hundreds were celebrating the new year.

A further 40 people are thought to have been wounded in the attack, which has been captured in CCTV footage.

The location of the gunman is currently unknown.

It happened at one of the most popular nightclubs in the heart of Istanbul, and ambulances have been sent to the scene.

Special forces and explosives experts are currently searching the venue. The whereabouts of the attackers is unknown.

Istanbul Governor Osman Şahin has described the shooting as a terrorist attack.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the New Year's Eve shooting

Initial reports suggested that two gunmen had stormed the building, but authorities are currently understood to be searching for one killer.

Turkish news site Virgul reports that the killer was shouting in Arabic during the attack.

Footage from the scene showed at least six ambulances with flashing lights and civilians being escorted out.

Several people are believed to have jumped into the water outside the venue before being rescued by police.

Media reports said police have cordoned off the area and an operation is ongoing.

A reporter from NTV said the attack may have been carried out by a lone gunman.

The nightclub lies on the European side of the Bosphorus Strait which divides Istanbul in two.

It is believed that 17,000 police officers are on duty in the city tonght

An estimated 17,000 police officers are on duty in the city. Turkey has been heavily hit by terror attacks in 2016.

Earlier today Neslihan Dogruol, a restaurant owner in a chic Istanbul neighborhood, said she hopes for peace in 2017 following a year filled with 'unrest and death.'

'2016 affected everyone badly,' she said, referring to major attacks that hit Turkey in the past year.

The attack happened in one of Istanbul's busiest nightspot

The Reina nightclub, in Istanbul, where the attack took place

The restaurant, adorned with snowflakes and tiny decorative lights for the evening, will have fewer people for dinner, she said.

At a commemoration for the 45 people killed in twin bombings on December 10 in Istanbul, Murat Manoglu hoped for a better year ahead.

'We lived through terrible days,' he said.

Security measures were heightened in major Turkish cities. Traffic leading up to key squares in Istanbul and the capital, Ankara, have been closed.

Info coming in now and it sounds very bad.

Istanbul governor: At least 35 killed in nightclub attack, 40 wounded - CNNTurk, Reuters, AP

From Hurriyet:
35 killed in terror attack on famous night club in central Istanbul
Quote:
An attacker killed at least 35 people, including a police officer, in a gun attack held on Reina, a popular night club in Istanbul, Governor Vasip Şahin said early on Jan. 1 live.

Dozens of people were also wounded in the attack, local broadcasters have reported.

Şahin said the attacker killed a police officer and a civilian at the gate of Reina by the Bosphorus, before entering inside and raving through the crowd celebrating the new year.

A reporter at the crime scene said live on CNNTurk that some 50 to 60 ambulances have been dispatched to the scene.

"The inglorious (attacker) raved through the place with Kalashnikovs. The U.S. intelligence warned over such an attack about one week or 10 days ago and measures have been taken, including the sea front. And look what has happened then," Mehmet Koçarslan told Hürriyet reporter Toygun Atilla adding that such an attack was coming, but could not be prevented.

Unconfirmed initial reports speculated that the attack was held by a person wearing Santa Claus costume.

...Reina is one of the international night clubs in Istanbul frequented by the high-society, celebs, artists and football stars.

Some revelers had jumped into the water to escape the gunfire and were being rescued by police, NTV said.

The local governor confirms that there was only 1 shooter but doesn't comment on where he might be.

Dozens Reported Dead In Istanbul Nightclub Attack
Quote:
The governor of the Turkish city of Istanbul has said at least 35 people were killed and about 40 injured when an armed attacker struck a nightclub early on January 1.

Governor Vasip Sahin told journalists that a single gunman carried out the attack, which he labeled a “terrorist” incident.

...Media were reporting that least 500 people and as many as 800 were in the club at the time of the attack. Some partygoers reportedly jumped into the Bosporus Strait to escape the gunfire.

Yeah, no kidding. I assumed something was going to happen, but it doesn't make it any less shitty.

I lucked in and have the night off. I'll not be downtown, we're going to a fairly low key house party. But I know downtown Ottawa is going to be ridiculous tonight, and I'm hoping nothing stupid happens.

I caught the tail end of the fireworks show from the Hill - it looks like such a pretty night with the snow falling - loved the way it softened the fireworks. Looks to be a huge crowd on the Hill right now, lots of families. It's the latter comment that concerns me - please, PLEAASE let this remain incident free. Especially this year, the 150th birthday of the country.

Both Turkish and international media have reported that there are anywhere from 17,000-25,000 security troops in Istanbul alone.

But all it takes is one determined person.

We aren't much for New Year's Eve partying. But, even if we were, I doubt we'd go anywhere in public.

It's a sad state of affairs when instead of being able to just enjoy the fun of a holiday, there's a part of you that's holding your breath, waiting to hear when and where tragedy will strike this time.

Our news has been showing a bit of what I think is some kind of pooled news footage. How heartbreaking for those folks who just wanted to go out & have fun.

I just now learned, (news offerings are lean tonight), that they don't have the gunman yet... damn.

It seems this was a night club that was popular with celebrities & members of Turkish 'high society'. It's being described as high end & very exclusive. The names of some of the dead & injured might end up being fairly commonly known.

There are reports that there were warnings, even a rumour that the owner of the night club had been warned about a potential attack - not sure if that was a specific warning.

Patrons & passers by, in a state of panic, were leaping into the Bosphorus trying to escape the attack. Police marine units were kept busy rescuing people - no word on any injuries or worse, among those who took to the water.

The Reina?

[email protected]

I hate to see Turkey and particularly Istanbul go this way. It, along with Singapore, is one of those few cities where you can have an international conference and everyone is comfortable and easy for everyone to get into.

Default Blaming America for creating Islam?

Mehmet Kocarslan, The owner of the Istanbul nightclub targeted early Sunday by a Santa Claus-clad killer reportedly told Turkish newspaper Hurriyet that his Reina nightclub had received warnings from "American intelligence."
The United States is denying reports in Turkish [state controlled] news outlets and on social media that its security agencies knew in advance that a nightclub in Istanbul was at risk of a terror attack.

The U.S. Embassy in Ankara said in a statement issued Sunday that "contrary to rumors circulating in social media, the U.S. Government had no information about threats to specific entertainment venues, including the Reina Club."

The statement says the U.S. also "did not warn Americans to stay away from specific venues or neighborhoods."

The Embassy says that on Dec. 22, the U.S. Embassy issued a general "holiday season threat warning" for Turkey and various parts of Europe, "as we do whenever there are indications that American citizens might be targeted or subjected to violence."

The 'suspect still at large' is the part that's really surprising me. That kind of attack will take several minutes minimum, and it opened with him gunning down several people including a cop outside on the street. If he did actually get away, he moved very quickly and blended in with the panicked crowd... But that's so very rare for these. I'm not saying it's impossible or implausible, just surprising.

Oric - sad for your people. Sorry for the thread drift, but I notice no facebook filters or "pray for Istanbul" posts at all on social media here in the west. This is the first I'm hearing of it two days later.

Turkish Bar Association has filed a complaint with the Calling for the investigation and prosecution of those that praised the attack on social media.

Of course wit called for the prosecution against those who protested and depicted violence against Santa Claus.
