Default Possibility of Significant Winter Storm Popping Up for Mid-Atlantic / S. New England 2/9/17

There were a few models that suggested a large storm for later this week, but now many of the models are coming on board.

Crazy because its close to 60F here today.

According to the pressure chart that deep low south of Greenland
is dragging a lot of cold air down and across from Northern Canada .

I think if I lived in that area I would buy a king sized double bed
electric blanket , wrap myself in it and hibernate .

Storm Watches are now up for the areas. Mine:

Quote:
Winter Storm Watch
Issued: 3:29 PM EST Feb. 7, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Wednesday evening through
Thursday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Winter
Storm Watch... which is in effect from Wednesday evening through
Thursday afternoon.

* Locations... eastern Pennsylvania and central and northern New
Jersey.

* Hazard types... heavy snow.

* Snow accumulations... potential for 6 or more inches.

* Timing... a wintry mix will overspread the area from the west
Wednesday night. The event will likely begin as snow north of
the I-78 corridor. Elsewhere, rain will change over to snow from
northwest to southeast late Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. Sleet may mix briefly during the transition from rain
to snow. The snow could be heavy at times late Wednesday night
and Thursday morning before tapering off from west to east
during the afternoon Thursday.

* Impacts... the heavy snow and poor visibilities at times could
make travel dangerous. Significant impacts to the Thursday
morning rush are likely.

* Winds... north 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* Temperatures... upper 30s and lower 40s at the onset, falling
into the lower 30s by early Thursday morning.

* Visibilities... 1/2 mile or less at times in heavy snow.

If one of the components to this forecast storm is the system sitting overhead here now, you may be in for a real... treat. It started raining about 3 hours ago - genuine freezing rain. We've had some ice pellets in the mix but most of the precip has been freezing rain - the kind that splats down flat & freezes to any surface instantly.

My world increasingly looks like a giant icicle. Thankfully, it's supposed to start warming up overnight; from the current temp of 20F to 36 by some time after dawn. I hope the forecast showers do materialize or Thursday will be a right mess, with temps plummeting to 5F by late tomorrow evening.

I've seen 3 vehicles & 2 pedestrians since this started... all moving very, very slowly.

We almost hit 60*F yesterday and today it's in the 20's. The watch for Des Moines is for snow starting around midnight and going to noon Wednesday. I'm not worried, I have lots of food in the freezer and the house is well insulated.

Ours was supposed to be up to a foot of snow by morning. It shifted JUST north of the city, and I hope it stays that way. DH said there was a bit of freezing rain as it shifted NE, but we have so much snow to absorb it, no problem.

It's ugly here - we're white again but with ice pellets, nicely stuck together with freezing rain. The temperature has started climbing a bit though - hoping it will turn to rain & melt off the yuck before mid-morning.

The wind is here. Sue it should arrive in your area in an hour or two.

Lordie, it's just starting to rise now after swinging from the northeast to south/southeast. The temperature popped up like a cork & it's well above freezing now... this may all melt off by mid-morning. Just before it turns right cold again.

Our winter storm warning still has us in the 6-10 inch range, which seems mind boggling since we are supposed to set a record high of 64F today.

Quote:
Winter Storm Warning

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from midnight tonight to 4 PM
EST Thursday...

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for snow... which is in effect from midnight tonight
to 4 PM EST Thursday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in
effect.

* Accumulations... snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches.

* Locations... eastern Pennsylvania and central and northern New
Jersey.

I thought we might get by this year without a "big one". Guess not.

lol thats not a big one its just a regular one

I've learned that you don't know how much you'll get until its finished and you can measure it.

those folks with their multimillion dollar toys are wrong usually. they can guess but lots of things effect what really happens

they are good for giving a heads up that storms are coming

It's all relative. I was in OCMD in January and they got 8-10 inches and you would have thought civilization collapsed.

I was going to ask how people & areas were faring - haven't caught your weather news yet. After our little icy mess - it is COLD here for the next few days.

we got a dusting instead of the 3-6 like all the experts were saying lol

Its windy here on the backside of the front and we're getting small snow squaws but nothing big. They just blow on through. More like a big heavy cloud comes over and it snows and then moves on

HA! 500th post lol just noticed

It took much longer to change over from rain here, which happened around 6:00 am. It's 10:30 and the sun is out now. We ended up with 4-6 inches (snowed pretty hard when it was snowing).

My kids (and DW) got a snow day out of it, as it was the worst right when the transportation to school would have been. I came in a little early to beat the bad stuff, and had very little trouble.

North Jersey and Long Island are getting it pretty good I understand.

We're currently enjoying the calm before the storm as we wait for the snow and wind to start. We're supposed to get over a foot of snow with winds over 60 mph.

We usually get groceries on Thursday or Friday, so hubby's currently in town doing that (along with everyone else in the county), I filled up the water jugs we keep on hand for storms, and I put a big pot of beef stew in the oven an hour ago. Since the really high winds aren't supposed to start until tomorrow, I'll mix up a batch of dough before I go to bed so I can hopefully get some bread baked early tomorrow morning - fingers crossed the power stays on long enough for me to get that done.

Winds have been fierce here all afternoon. Lost count on how many times the power tripped off (which is raising hell with the experiment I'm trying to run).
