Wink Global extinction by bread .

Quote:
The study showed that the use of ammonium nitrate fertilizer in wheat
cultivation contributed 43 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
This, the university said on Monday, dwarfed "all other processes in the
supply chain."

"We found in every loaf there is embodied global warming resulting from
the fertilizer applied to farmers' fields to increase their wheat harvest,"
Liam Goucher, the N8 Agrifood Research Fellow who carried out the study,
said in a news release.

"This arises from the large amount of energy needed to make the fertilizer
and from nitrous oxide gas released when it is degraded in the soil."

Well silly me , I thought growing wheat took carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere .

There is much much much more here if you can handle it .

Well before the days of corporate farming there was crop rotation.

Not surprising but very interesting info-
Thank you Ross

This is the mix we were using on the western Australian farm>>
https://csbp-fertilisers.com.au/fert...rs/agras-range

very heavy in ammonium nitrate, Very costly and about 300 tons used each year across the cropping program.

That doesn't account for the urea spread early in the growing process- About 500 tons of this.

The two most expensive cost inputs to the program are Fert' and Chemicals.

Fuel (diesel) is only a small cost compared to this above- 100000 litres used per year on average (total for crop and sheep/other). Having said that, The seeding tractor (700HP) uses 1600 litres in a 24 hour period.

15000 litres of roundup(Glyphosate)+/- used each year @ around $4.50/litre+/-.(shopping price retail Oz=around $15/litre+)

Upward of 15 different main chemicals used across the growing season.

The cost of production, this year, for wheat on average in WA is $300/ton. The average price this year for wheat is $240/ton.

you can not keep doing things like this for long.... =Buggered Farmers with huge debt

Very happy! with my move back to NZ....>>
Where Dairying has gone crazy and Water use looks unsustainable more,
where I now am.... Canterbury NZ. Different places-Different problems

You're right Ross, The summer has been poor depending on where you are. Very wet some of north island/west coast- south island, very dry in other areas with no growth.

They have been having trouble harvesting crops because of a cold late sowing which means a later delayed harvest.
Preparing for a cold winter here, at 44 degrees south, Cutting first dried logs stored on the farm tomorrow....
