Default The Power of Cow Dung

Been reading more and more about the wonders of burning wood pellets to save the planet from climate change or something.

Decided to look up the energy density of wood pellets and blew my mind!!!

Quote:
1) Solid fuels:

Coal
coal: 23 to 42 MJ, with average of 29.3 MJ/kg
bituminous coal: 30 MJ/kg
charcoal: 28.8 MJ/kg
Nuclear
Uranium-235 (235U): 8 x 10^7 J/kg
Paper
paper: 20 MJ/kg
Switchgrass
oven-dried switchgrass: 16.75 MJ/kg
Solid waste (incineration)
municipal garbage: 12 MJ/kg
polystyrene: 40 MJ/kg
cow dung: 15 MJ/kg =====================!!!!!
Wood
wood: 17.6 MJ/kg
seasoned firewood ( for 1 cord = 8’ x 4’ x 4’ pile):
15.3 million BTUs = 16,140 MJ
wood pellets: 15.8 MJ/kg ===================!!!!
I guess this puts the UK on par with India.

If that doesn't explain why we should be going all nuclear, than nothing will.

A few people in Japan would disagree with you.

Be a terrible waste to burn the manure.

Use it as feedstock to generate methane then use the spent slurry as fertilizer on the fields and pastures to feed the cattle that produced the manure.

Fuku was the result of a ridiculous design flaw in the back-up generators being placed below the level of the sea wall in an area well know for large EQs and tsunamis. The event has (and should) made the industry world-wide reassess many many assumptions around back-up power for the plants.

Otherwise, the land might die. Seriously. European land was degraded when famine hit because the last course was to eat the animals which fertilized the land. Now, we fertilize the land with oil. We also feed cows oil, and corn.
