| Flu Speculation Flu Speculation A place for "off the wall" discussions and speculation about events that "may" be related to influenza ranging from news on outbreaks that might be flu but which aren't confirmed to really OTB theories related to flu. |

Samen, the problem with that theory is, the people carrying the virus back into the US from Mexico after vacationing there are primarily white upper middle class teens and young adults - ie, of European extraction.

Who is carrying it I don’t think matters; everybody gets it if it is to be, but how severe it will be, is the speculation going around.
The speculation over here is that the virus thrives in type O so the death rate is higher in type O
I posted this in speculation as it sure is nothing more than speculation
My understanding of virology is limited to: bad virus bad, kill it if you can.
The map shows the situation of blood type O around the globe
At the moment it sure looks like the Wikipedia outbreak map and is interesting only for that reason.
Just to clarify, im not a believer in this speculation, just the map overlays are two interesting to, not post in a sub room called flu speculation.
As the situation changes they will probably look totally different, if not …
The only conclusion I can draw is two nations of great warriors share the same blood type.

lol. Ditto.
I think it may have more to do with temperature and humidity. Mexico, and even south Texas, are hot this time of year while the more northern parts of the US and Europe are still cool. In 1918 the South Pacific and India had very high rates of fatalities which were blamed on the heat and humidity in those areas. We're going into summer so even the northern areas will be seeing heat waves soon. It will be interesting to see how air conditioning affects cytokine storms and secondary infections such as pneumonia.

Reeeeally? Someone ought to tell that to whatsername, the Indonesian health minister. She was quoted on another thread saying that the virus wouldn't survive in tropical places like Indonesia...
I would but human deaths are no laughing matter.

LOVELIEST of trees, the cherry now / Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride / Wearing white for Eastertide.
Now, of my threescore years and ten, / Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score, / It only leaves me fifty more.
And since to look at things in bloom / Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go / To see the cherry hung with snow.

it thrives on "O", which happens to be the most common blood type. What are the odds? Even if this isn't true, since there's more O than anything else...

AB+, the universal recipient!
Actually it works in reverse for plasma - AB becomes the universal donor.
My dad's side is Scottish.

Going by the chart, all historical data, and random internet conspiracy threads, A+ means you are susceptible to mosquito bites and may itch 25% more than the average B+ human.

Jason, the Scots and Irish are closely related and both have ancient Celtic roots. My AB comes from the Irish ancestry.

Actually I think it is O negative that is considered the universal doner.

However, even type O negative blood may have antibodies that cause serious reactions during a transfusion.
Ideally, blood transfusions are done with donated blood that's an exact match for type and Rh factor. Even then, small samples of the recipient's and donor's blood are mixed to check compatibility in a process known as crossmatching. In an emergency, however, type O negative red blood cells may be given to anyone — especially if the situation is life-threatening or the matching blood type is in short supply.
