Tags are a new feature in this version of VBulletin.

If you are not familiar with tags, they are a very handy function.

When you post a thread you will see a box directly underneath that says "Tags". It will tell you how many tags you may add to the thread.

In addition, every thread has a tag box, located just above the reply box. On the right side there is a button that says "Edit tags". Everyone can use that button to add tags. Again, it will tell you how many tags you can add to the thread.

When you use the "search" feature up in the toolbar, you will see "tag search" where you can type in a word and search for tags. There will also be a tag "cloud" where the most searched for words and terms will appear as we build up that database.

Tag searches come in very handy when you are searching for a thread on a subject rather than trying to identify a word that appeared in the text. For example, if I wanted to find all threads about "flu vaccines" I could search for that tag and pull up the thread that has just been posted in the Flu Clinic. As we have more similar threads we will tag them appropriately and you will have a list of threads about flu vaccines.

You can also use tags to create groups for yourself and others. If you want to collect a group of threads about food preparation, for example, just tag your favorites with "food prep" and you'll be able to pull up a collection whenever you want - as will everyone else.

Tags can be added at any point in the life of a thread, so if you read something you like and want to save, its almost like a shared bookmark. Tag it.

Yes, but it does not have to be text that is contained within the post. For instance, you can tag by category like "pandemic preps" and then when anyone clicks on that tag in the tag cloud or searches through the tag box, they'll pull up all threads about preparing for a pandemic. But you must tag the thread first.

While we're on the topic, we also have automatic tagging:

When you make a thread, the system will take all the words from your title and make tags from them. It's still a good idea to manually create tags for situations where a keyword that describes the thread isn't in the topic.
