Arrow Maintaining your weight with 60 minutes of exercise a day

Researchers have found that middle aged women or older of average weight need 60 minutes of exercise per day to maintain their weight. The researchers wanted to help overweight women who had successfully lost weight to be able to maintain their new body weight long term. The federally recommended amount of exercise of 30 minutes a day, did bring health benefits, but was insufficient to prevent weight gain.

This kind of simplistic announcement bugs me. How much exercise you actually need to control your weight is going to vary dramatically depending upon your metabolism, diet and many other factors.

Yeah...and if you want to LOSE weight you need to run a marathon a day...

fr: everywhere I read about it, it is said that losing is more tied to diet than exercise.

I dunno if I believe 'em. Old fat dogs I've had who get mental, start pacing but still eat well...and get skinny

While it's disheartening to hear 60 min over 30....I think the idea that sure, it's individual but there are generalities that fit within groups.

How on earth does one fit 60 min into a work day?

I have been doing it the last couple of days. It isn't easy. The best method for me, is to have a snack that will stave off starvation about 1/2 hour before work is over, get home, change clothes and get right on the cross trainer before I hit the sofa or kitchen.

Thanks, FR. We're just getting into that in meditation class, but from what I can tell it's not the type of walking that would be considered exercise.

You burn off far fewer calories at various types of exercise than you might think. Me for example, at 105 or thereabouts - if I run 60 minutes at 10 minutes per mile, (in my dreams for both time & distance!), I only burn off 511 calories or about 2 sandwiches. The very best thing to do is not consume the extra calories in the first place. An hour of reasonably brisk walking only burns, (for me), 190 calories.

I'll have to look at that study but what's unquestionabale is 30-60 minutes per day of exercise has a ton of health benefits. And a day off a week is a good idea. It's a rest & recovery day so you have less risk of injury or exercise burnout.

Nobody let CSue exercise 60 mins a day - she needs to *GAIN* weight. :P

To my knowledge, 60 minutes of brisk walking = 30 mins of running (in terms of calorie burn.)

Ought is correct, your metabolism, the shape you are in and how much you weigh (and your sex) factor huge into your calorie burn.

Also, you can get 60 mins of exercise throughout the day, you do not have to do it all in one shot. Vacuuming, mowing the yard (with a push mower), yard work, cleaning floors, walking here and there etc ad nauseam all count and they add up. Make sure to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.

I'm a idiot. I meant to add the URL to a neat calculator. Punch in your weight, add the amount of time you're exercising & choose from a drop down menu of exercise activities to see, (roughly), how many calories your activiy consumes:

My daily exercise sessions so far have not 'cost' me more than 165 calories. I've added about 1000 calories on top of that to my daily intake.

When I have to be reminded, I snap it twice...LOL

Didn't I say I was going for a nap? I've been reading through a list of transitory nicotine withdr4awal symptoms & sleep disturbances & added fatigue MAY occur & last several days to a week. Definitely taking it easy today & tomorrow - get some non-stressed time in the bank.

Now where's one of my cats? Can't nap without a cat...
