CNN's reporting roughly 104 on board and a 1500 ton displacement... Corvette size or so.

We had more nuclear sabre rattling by the North again yesterday IIRC.

Fartlett Minor just completed and presented a semester-long project on the Korean War last week and spent a good deal of time talking about present relations, etc....
At least there will be a handful of middle schoolers who will appreciate this news item.

I'm reading at Drudge that the ship sank within 4 hours. At this point, 58 of the 104 crew have been rescued.

Here is the ship that was sank:
It was the Cheonan, a Pohang-class corvette, hull number 772. The ship displaces 1,350 tons. This was the anti-surface warfare variant. It was armed with one 76mm rapid-fiire gun, two single-barrel 30mm anti-aircraft gun mounts, and two MM-38 Exocet anti-ship cruise missiles. There are also anti-submarine warfare variants in this class of ship with different armament. This is an older class of corvette that was first commissioned in 1964. Top speed is 32 knots.
The Chenonan was struck in the rear, possibly by a wake-homing torpedo. There are still 46 crew members missing.

Even with Kim being a douche bag there are some reasons ROK and the US would want to soft pedal.
Kim is on his last legs. His oldest is "weak" so he has to go down the chain to #2 IIRC. #2 was western educated and probably was a more conciliatory stance toward the west. (Even if he is more libertine than his father.)
There are a LOT of hardline DPRK generals who want to go back to the old days. Maybe one of them authorized this action as a show of strength.
The west are probably doing what they can to keep the transition going to his son and not the hardline Generals.

Potemkin is very close to the truth. Sensible leaders don't want to let a rogue general take their focus off the bigger picture. The suppressed news is a good sign that the world is pretty much of one mind on whatever is happening.
The combined news suppression attempt is also disturbing.

They have pretty much given up hope of finding more survivors.

The USA may not want it front page because ...
- Gold may rise ( a lot of money has been spent keeping the price down )
- The stock market may fall ( lot of money spent keeping it up )
If NK did it then there will be more such incidents .
They are in big trouble with failed currency changes and food shortages
with much worse food shortages in the near future .
NK needs distractions and enemies to bond the people to the Government .

Now they are saying "maybe it was a Korean War-era mine", or "maybe their was an accident with the ship's own missiles/mines/torpedoes". The latter is an interesting claim, since according to various military websites I have read, the Cheonan was the anti-surface warfare variant which does not carry mines or torpedoes.
