Jane Austen's works were heavily edited
Jane Austen was a writer ahead of her time, with a style similar to Virgina Woolf. Her spelling and punctuation were chaotic, and she spoke with an Archers-like voice with a Hampshire burr. Her hand written manuscripts do not show the precise English grammar of her published works. It is being suggested that her published books were edited by William Gifford, a poet working for her second publisher, John Murray.
