Arrow Scientists create a 1000 core processor chip

They were also able to give each core its own slice of dedicated memory.

A multi-million cell FPGA can cost tens of thousands of dollars PER PACKAGE. That's ONE BGA chip on a substrate. They make good prototypes for complex circuitry because they can be re-programmed, and the design can be tested prior to applying it to real silicon.

FPGA programming design is a pretty complex skill. I knew someone who was imported from Scottland on an H1B visa to do just such a job.

From this article, it seems they grow good FPGA programmers in Edinburgh.
