Given that this is in Louisiana, I'll guess these are burns from exposure to petrochemicals of some kind that happen to look kinda like sunburns. Strange ailments sometimes befall people who pass through or near petroleum and gas fumes and related products.

My money is on just plain ol' sunburn from exposure until I can hear or read more to substantiate that the students were not in direct contact with enough to cause such burns.

Students went on field trip to Rayne Civic Center in Rayne, Louisiana, followed by a trip to a fast food restaurant in Crowley. Happened yesterday.

They weren't even outdoors. The field trip was to a civic center, on a bus.

I would assume this bus had windows. I've been sunburned through windows in my car traveling . I don't have enough info in the short article to rule out sunburn. Unless you do. They also reportedly stopped at a fast food restaurant on the way back. I assume they got out.Maybe even messed around outside. Don't know. Not enough info.

Arc light or high pressure sodium light sunburns. (I am not sure which.)
Sometimes gyms use high power lights. Sometimes when they begin to fail they put of high amounts of UV light causing sunburns.
Usually they have a shield to absorb the UV light but sometimes they are damaged or removed when bulbs are replaced.
I remember several reports over the last 10-15 years where children in gyms getting sunburned by failing lights.
