Dog bites off part of Home Depot greeter's nose
Leaning down & planting your face near a small dog you don't know while trying to pat it - not smart:

Not smart to do it with a small dog you know, either...a similar thing happened to me about a month before my wedding. Mine wasn't as bad as this one, though, the dog only put a small nick in my nostril and scraped the top layer of skin off of the top of my nose.

My instinct has always been to slowly put my hand out for a dog to sniff, before touching or getting closer to it.

And the greeter bears no responsibility whatsoever for this? First you ASK the owner if you can pet the dog. THEN you do rb's sniff-test. It's a pity that the dog may have to be put down because both the owner and the injured woman were idiots.

The first thing you do if you want to pet a strange dog is putting your hand down in a non threatening matter palm towards yourself, and allow the dog a sniff.
I don't pet strange dogs unless they indicate they are friendly towards me.

It's always the little ones that get you. I was bitten pretty badly by a chihuahua when I was 4.
