Default Salt needed. Bowel problem.

I suffer from low sodium levels due to genetic reasons and also having my adrenals removed a few years back.
It doesn't affect me much unless I am in the heat and it is now chilly in NZ.
A month ago I realised I had bowel problems. 2 weeks ago I found my ulcerative proctitis was back with the usual problems of BMW...blood, mucus wind and plenty of toilet visits (if I'm lucky and fast enough). Thats why I have been away from BM...not that anyone would notice.
My mother had the same thing. Damned genes.
I am on meds top and bottom for that and things are slowing down gradually however I find that my sodium level has crashed.
112...probably due to the proctitis. I thought it had as light head, sore joints and eye problems had started.
Doctor told me to eat more salt as I can't have extra replacement steroids to help due to high BP.
I have anchovies in the fridge, and always pour table salt on my meals..I am not a salt lover but I do. Pizza gives me a huge boost..plus a huge waist line.
Frankly my heart and I can't afford too many of those salt ladden fast foods /pastas and I would rather know how to do it myself.
Are there any highly salted healthy low fat meal ideas out there that are edible and easy to make? Everything these days seems aimed at low sodium etc etc.

I know it's a weird one but I am serious.

Olives are very high in sodium. So is cheese. I love a lunch of fruit, olives, cheese and stoned wheat crackers. Very high sodium levels there.

Minnestrone soup has especially high sodium levels. So does onion soup.

Pickles have loads of salt in them.

Tuna salad tastes better if you nuke it with a lot of salt. Use regular tuna, as albacore is high in mercury.

Shrimp and prawns are very high in sodium.

If you are weird or British (but I repeat myself ) and you like Vegemite, the stuff is loaded with sodium.

I am afraid veggies are not much help if you want to load up on sodium. Chickpeas and mung beans have some, but not huge amounts. You can always salt the hell out of them, though.

Fruit has just about no sodium at all.

My wife is loyal to Her Majesty she insists we only purchase Marmite in our house.
Still has the sodium. And I eat it. May help a bit.
Vegemite is an Aussie concoction made with yeast and kangaroo road kill.
Greenpeace as well as the Danes want it banned as they think there might be the occasional dead hitchhiker in there.

I've also had a problem with low sodium from time to time and did some research to answer the same question that you have.

Bouillon, especially chicken, is very high in sodium. One cup prepared with water has about 1100 mg. Drinking a cup of that once or twice a day would be a significant intake of sodium. It's also very low in calories.

Knorr tomato bouillon is also high in sodium, having almost 1200 mgs of sodium in one cup. That's about half of the daily recommended amount of sodium. You can find Knorr products on Amazon.

Neither is the most delicious thing on the planet but they do deliver a lot of sodium with relatively few calories.

Hope that helps.

I eat slices of cured, smoked ham (very salty). Also roasted and salted macadamia (sp?) or pistachio nuts.

I used to take salt pills whenever i moved from cold climate to hot.
A controlled amount in a pill.
No need for junk food or guesstimating how much salt to shake on the meat.

Alas the wonderous folk who control our lives in NZ decided that salt pills are an unnecessary item for our pharmacies and it disappeared off the shelves everywhere....years ago. I know I have looked...and asked.
You see.. they decided it caused high blood pressure and stuff those who genuinely need salt.

Hmm and i was going to put in my above post "available from a pharmacy near you".

Well that opens up an interesting hobby for you, a pill maker.

I recommend some research in to the composition of sodium if necessary and then on pill making.

I dont know anything about pill making but salt seems to be one of the easiest to do as it docent need anything to hold it together, maybe some small diameter tubes, disolved salt in them and then some heat, solar is the ancient way.

Actually im getting all exited about this and hope you, do it

You need to buy those salt tablets we had in sports so you would retain water and not dehydrate.

They were coated to keep the taste down and stomach upset down.

Zero calories like pizza

[Edited. Just read your post about NZ not allowing salt tablets.]

OK, how about making your own? Pill tableting machine. http://www.healinglamp.com/pill.htm

How to assemble.
Buy gelatin capsules and make your own? We can still buy them here in the pharmacies, several different sizes.

So why not just order them online?

Lactose Yak

Salt Tablet Substitute?
I couldn't buy the salt tablets I usually take while I was in New Zealand recently. The closest I could get was something called "Blackmores Celloid Mineral Sodium Compound". I wonder if anyone could comment on the content, and how these compare with normal salt tabs:
Sodium Phosphate - 200mg
Sodium Sulfate - 200mg
Potassium Chloride - 25mg
In a base of lactose, fructose, gluten-free wheat starch, magnesium stearate, soy fibre and microcrystalline cellulose.
To be cautious I took only 2 over the course of a 6 hour race - no cramp or other low-sodium symptoms, so I guess it was ok. Any comments welcomed.

I'm a salt freak.
Right now I'm using red mined salt. Not sure of the exact name or region.
Sprinkle it on cheddar cheese, apples, cucumbers, steamed broccoli, cheddar/spinach toast sandwiches, eggs, even a little on chocolate sometimes.
Get some good salt and try it on everything.
I am not a doctor or dietician.

Asked around for the Blackmore Sodium Compound and any other sodium products. Tried the pharmacies, health shops and a chinese herbal guy but got nowhere.
Have been drinking homemade rehydration fluids of 2 teaspoons of salt to 7 of sugar in 2.5 pints of orange flavored water. Shaken well it is good. Got it off a WHO website.
Helped a lot. Will order the 1000 tablet container off Amazon next month ..June... Postage and our exchange rate are horrendous but it would last a fair time and will probably be cheaper than monthly small purchases.

The Pizza had me up hourly from 2am until 8am. Never ever will I do that again during a flare. Being the only one awake in a cold bathroom on these cool nights gets the imagination going overtime..I worked out my funeral and who would be sleeping with the wife when I'm gone. Bugger that.

I will start hunting down obscure salts...not that NZ has a lot. All our domestic salt is from evaporated sea salt at Lake Grassmere in our South Island..I am sure the expensive deli down the road will have something.
Had sardines with heaps of salt for lunch...lovely.

I am on a low sodium diet. Here are some of the things I can no longer eat:

-cheese (I think parmesan is the worst)
-bouillon (cubes, especially, like Knorr)
-most Mexican food
-most Chinese food (with shoyu)
-a lot of Italian food
-bacon, ham, hot dogs, sausages, and most deli lunch meats
-spaghetti/marinara or alfredo sauce - pizza with pepperoni or sausage!
-beef jerky
-many condiments
-olives and pickles
-many breads and bread-type foods (muffins, etc.)
-"regular" potato chips/corn chips and many crackers
-most salad dressings
-many canned foods like soups, etc.

Hope this helps.
