Having been there quite a few times and gotten off the path, it isn't that bad.
I don't think the days of the Mao Tse-tung and the great purges could happen again.
There is too much communication, internet, e-mail, cell phones with camera, Weibo (Twitter-like), Ren-ren (Facebook like) going on.
To many prosperous cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, etc. Huge middle classes that DO NOT want to go back to the old days.
They like their homes, their ACs, their cars, their dishwashers, education, travel to Hong Kong, etc.
Even the upper lower classes are liking what they are tasting. 600-800sq ft apartments, scooters, jobs, money and a chance to send your children off to the University.
Right now, it is kind of laissez-faire between the citizens and the Communist Party, China. The government really doesn't want disruption, the people making money don't want to disrupt that.
Give it 20 years of slow evolution and China will come around. (Slow and consensus, the Chinese way.)
