It's hotter then hell here and it's going to get much worse. As I was driving home an elderly man riding his bike collapsed on Yonge St. A couple of people including a bus driver ran to his rescue, they were almost carrying him off the sidewalk over to some shade..

I have the air cranked, it's cool in the house. I have all the blinds and curtains closed. It's all good here right now but DD has soccer tonight. We might not go. It's ridiculous to be out running around in this heat.

I had to run into the bank this afternoon. They have buckets of ice loaded with water bottles. They are telling people to take one when they leave the bank.

Here comes the sun. Crap.

AG, DD#1 skipped her game Monday, due to the humidity, #2 can't. DH is the coach, and the game today is 5:45. I'm going to suffer through it s moral support. I worry so much about the kids in these temps, having to run the fields.

If your DH is the coach, have him postpone the game due to extreme heat. It is child abuse having sports in that kind of heat.

Bring an unbrella for shade and have plenty of ice and water. Coach should postpone the game. Barring that, mandatory breaks and shorter halfs are in order.

Suffered through 5 days of a baseball tournament with the heat. We coaches have to wear full uniform too. It's been pretty nasty. Pass the Gold Bond please.

I hate the idea of kids running around in that too. I know often, cancelling it means it can't be rescheduled or a team forfeits but that needs to be weighed against childrens' safety. At the very least, shorter periods of play & TNS of water & ice on hand for players & refs.

DH could forfeit the game only. Games are only ever cancelled due to lightning in the area, or field conditions wet enough to damage the turf. They are never cancelled due to excessive heat, torrential rain, wind, cold, or snow. And I have seen it snow during draft games in May. Don't know if that's FIFA rules, or our local soccer association. Given the demand for our fields (more kids in soccer than hockey), it's highly unlikely they could reschedule more than 2 or 3 games a season. Tonight there will be between 10 and 14 games, just at the main complex, just for ages 8-18. Forget the minis or adults. That's also just house league, not the rep league. So we all tough it out.

This week was supposed to be girls high school softball play offs and they have been canceled. They had players, coaches and umpires dropping like flies.

11pm, we're sitting at a humidex reading of 37C/99F. Temp is actually 27C/81F. A not a single bit of air movement. Clouds, with the odd sprinkle of rain, have moved in, so I don't expect the temp to drop any further, but humidity will continue to increase throgh the night. Guess we'll have fog again in the morning.

Kids at soccer survived, with water breaks, but our team had no subs, and played short handed. Only one girl on our team had to leave the field. Brought DD home, and she immediately dove into the pool, staying there a good 45 minutes or more. I would have, too, but had to go with the in laws to look at a house down the street.

I'm getting worried about DH and his co-workers. Their shop at the steel mill has two ac units. Running full tilt, best they can get the temp to is 28C/82F. Their work clothes are supplied by the company now...full length pants, long sleeved shirts...cotton, but treated to be fire retardant, and they don't breathe at all. Add in work boots. Next to no air movement, unless you're right at the ac, and large ovens in use to burn off wire coatings in motors, etc. Floor to ceiling ovens. Most of the guys in there are of retirement age, and not of good health.

rb, seriously, about the game, stupidity needs to be recognized and attacked. If it means forfeiting the game, so be it. It is only a game. Kids are risking their health out there, and for what? If no one is brave enough to stand up to what is going on, it will never change.

At 1:30 am here it's 81 F with 83% humidity. It's a beautiful clear night and I stepped out to see the stars. But I only lasted a couple of minutes - it's like being in a sauna out there.

My DH is a power plant operator and he says that they're running everything they've got at maximum. But they can only do that for so long. Heaven help us all if this keeps up - there are going to end up being brown-outs from trying to maintain sufficient loads to meet such high demand.

I know, Mouse, but with our weather here in our short summer the way it is, I don't think it's possible. It's either so damned hot they're dying, or so damned wet and cold their teeth chatter for hours afterwards. Our only window for the season is from the beginning of June, until mid-August. To play in May means there could still be snow, and September is often too much rain. Not to mention we lose our refs mid-August...mostly college or university students. It's the only sport many kids have the chance to play, especially girls. Hockey is cost prohibitive, and no one wants to take their kid to a hockey rink at 4 am for a practice, due to the demand for ice time. Basketball is high school teams only, and football only for boys. So guess what most girls play...soccer. Usually we don't go this long without a few days break from this type of weather. Or it happens farther into the summer.

Temp here has gone up 2 degrees in the last hour...at 1:43am. Wind coming in from the south now. I swear I can smell the Gulf of Mexico. Ack! National news said more of the same for the rest of July and August. Thank gawd we replaced the pool this year, and thank gawd for window ac units. I'm not gonna' be loving our electricity bills. Window ac is struggling, but keeping the house at a fairly constant 23C, with low humidity.

rb - I take it you were catching CTV as well? When Dave Phillips said the rest of July, August & September would be warmer than normal, my heart sank. September - kay, warmer than usual can simply mean glorious but August? Ugh!

Not a breath of air moving & already unbearably sticky. Going to be a long day.

I went and did my duty rounds at quarter to 6, and it's already 33 out with humidity.

Oh, what a glorious morning! Humidex is 32C, with cloud cover, but the temp is down to 24, and there is a very gusty NW wind blowing. Just the wind shift alone is wonderful!

10am and the temp is 85F/29C but with the humidity at 70% our real feel is 93F/34C. It is breezy but its a hot soupy breeze. I went across the street to the store at 8:30 and the air was so wet and heavy I probably could have used fins. I'm off of work again today but have to go in tomorrow. Like rb dh we have giant heaters and undersized/no ac so everything that can be shut down for maintenance is.

Put on the airconditioning in the second floor for the first time in 20 years. (Don't like the astronomical bills so used a fan when it became sweltering.) Only to sleep.

Actually came into the house in the evening and the entire house was cooler, not stifling as it had been the minute I opened the front door the past few days.

Getting older and less tolerant of discomfort and sweating or freezing. You do what is right for the conditions.

Tomorrow 103, and god know what the humidex index is. 10:30 and it is very close and hot out of doors. So I'll leave the air conditioning working untill the lights go out, and with this heat we are bound to have power outages tomorrow. Next week very hot, but the temps won't be as high.

The cicadas are buzzing away, at least the ones that hatched out this year. It feels like the worst of August out there today. Going to a Mexican cooking demo and buffet at 12;30. That should be interesting and cooling..

Glad I didn't sign up for this:

https://www.pecosmartacsaverprogram....e/residential/

PECO Smart A/C Saver functions automatically. Once you enroll, our technicians will install a small switch outside your home near your central A/C unit. Then, just follow your routine. PECO Smart A/C Saver is only activated at times of high energy usage, during the summer months of June through September. Conservation events may occur on selected summer afternoons, between noon and 8 p.m.

Exodia. My folks have something similar and it shuts the ac off for 30 minutes at a time. Where they are I believe it was installed on all the houses on their street so it acts like a rolling blackout.
