I'm not aware that the USGS has ever made a call that ultimately proved accurate.

The real news here is not that the USGS hugely increased their estimate, but that their estimate is hugely lower than that of the industry. Part of the reason may be that they took only the Marcellus shale into account, and not the associated shales lying above and below it.
