DS's new baby.

This is my DS's new baby. S-he is about 5 weeks old and is a blue quaker. The baby is still being hand fed and won't leave until it perches properly and is eating on its own and maintaining weight for at least 2 weeks. We figure another 5 or 6 weeks at least.

What kind of bird is it? Beautiful color.

I know nothing about birds but he's pretty cute - has a 'kind' eye & the way his beak is shaped - looks like he's smiling.

How old does he have to be to start learning rude words?

I think it was a year for a friends parolett, but if it's a bigger bird it coud be different.

Some quakers have been known to learn words before they are weaned.

S-he is a blue quaker. The blue not common in the wild. Its one out of several thousand I believe. Usually they are green and grey with blue flight feathers.

Ah, a Quaker, they do learn quick from what I've read. A lot faster then the parolett, he didn't start until he was about 1 yr. S/he sure is a good looking one.

Unfortunately I have failed at my parental duty. I did not pass on the hockey gene to my kid. I'm sure DS and his room mates will be dreaming up all kinds of interesting things to teach that poor bird. When he comes to my house it will be nursery rhymes. It is sooo cute when they can do the animal noises from Old MacDonald.

One friend is teaching her birds Japanese and another named his Scooter Tramp and taught him every swear word he could.

Today DS and I made the 165 mile round trip to meet his new baby. Its colors are stunning and range from blue grey to turquoise to sky blue to a bluish lavender. I had such a good time watching the interaction between the 2.

Awe, they all wanted his attention. In some birds the little thing of skin above the beak where the nostrils are is blue on the males and pinkish on females. I don't know at what age it shows up though.

S-he's beautiful! As it gets older the colors will brighted and eventually, you'll know if its a boy or girl. We didn't know Pete was a girl until she started laying eggs. DS and I used to have a pair of greens and an amazon. We could not bring them with us when we moved here and it just broke our hearts. It has been 10 years but DS is ready to open his heart again.

It was very cute that DS was able to find the "aahh" spot within 2 minutes and had the baby purring and falling asleep on his chest. All 3 babies in the tank could not get enough attention and scratches from the fingers in the tank which is excellent. They really love on the birds at this store.

I just got off the phone with DS and I am so encouraged by his plans. One of the best things about DS getting a companion bird is that he will eat better. Cooking for 1 and eating alone is hard. Its much easier to grab a bite while your out or pick up a packaged dinner. DS fully understands that he'll be doing more from scratch cooking now because his feathered friend will be eating with him and eating what he is. DS will be eating more whole grains and vegetables because that is what he'll be fixing for his baby. DS grew up with us preparing the birds a hot breakfast, giving a vegetable and pellets during the day and sharing dinner which included fruit, vegie and lean meat with a fruit snack in the evenings.

One of the things we miss most about Pete besides her conversation is eating with her. We ate and she got her nibble. We always thought about her and her preferences. Quakers are sweet company! Your DS looks like he's perfect family for that baby Blue!

Luv, Your son will be a wonderful Daddy. He's a big teddy bear but has the heart of a lamb. I just loved that kid from the moment I met him. He protected us at that concert as though that was his mission. He took videos because he knew that it would please us. He is a gem and you are truly blessed. Birdys gonna have to love Metal though ! Give kiddo a hug from me!
