RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) - Breaking News: Plane Reported down at Reno Air Races.
It has been confirmed the Unlimited P 51 mustang plane "Galloping Ghost" piloted by Jimmy Leeward from Florida has gone into the stands during Race 77.

I just talked to my landlord on the phone, and he said he was going to Reno this weekend with some buddies, presumably for the air races. I am glad he is still here.

From what I'm reading and seeing, this is very, very bad. There are reports of people being cut in half and the ground littered with "body parts".

I just caught video on the news - moment of impact blocked by a bystander's head but oh my word. Debris flying everywhere. The poor pilot augered staight in.
What a horrible horrible thing to happen at what should be a throughly awesome & fun event.

There's going to be hell to pay over this. There were fatal crashes in 2007 and 2008 as well. There was discussion at the time that the race was just too dangerous.
One of the tweets I read ID'd the pilot and gave his age as 80. It's going to be hard to tell what caused the crash, even with all the video of it.

Huffington Post is reporting that the pilot's facebook page says "Jimmy been racing airplanes since the mid-seventies...".
So I don't know if he's 80 but I'd say that he's no spring chicken.
ETA: KOLO-TV seems to be confirming it via Twitter:
"Reno air races: Well-known pilot Jimmy Leeward, 80, of Ocala, Fla., died in crash; hospital reports 2 dead"

CNN will carry it - waiting for it now. Crashed into corporate boxes - might be some well known names among the dead/injured.

Huffington Post and now CNN are reporting that FAA staff were on the ground observing the race/show. Also NTSB are on scene, or may have already been there along with the FAA.

Presser being held right now.
CNN reporting that Reno police are saying that 9 people were killed. 7 fatalities "out on the tarmac".
ETA: From Reno Gazette Journal:
"12:59 p.m. update: The NTSB knows that part of the tail is missing on the aircraft that crashed. They have recovered something that may be the part that came off, but have confirmed it was from the aircraft. But they caution people not to draw any conclusions."

Imagine how much worse it had been if Leeward had been unable to turn the aircraft so it just hit the edge of the tarmac, and instead plowed right into the center of the stands. I suspect that there are going to be some big changes next year. I think that they will move the race farther out from the stands.

Hell, lets face it. If the promoters of air racing could sell tickets right under the pylons, they would . . . and lots of people would buy them. Better still they should put the high price boxes on the pylons.
