Default Hardhats part Deux: German space telescope to fall for Halloween

Panic early and avoid the rush.

"Second big satellite set to resist re-entry burn-up"

"...A defunct German space telescope called ROSAT is set to hit the planet at the end of October – and it even is more likely than UARS to cause injury or damage in populated areas.

...estimates that "up to 30 individual debris items with a total mass of up to 1.6 tonnes might reach the surface of the Earth."

Thank God we have a month to get over last night's panic (ending in a very unsatisfying anticlimax, since no one knows where it landed!) before the next one starts.

It could justify an entire month of "Panic Sex" for those so inclined.

Yep! It'll be a fun month.

And just think, scientists are predicting increased satellite showers through 2012 and 2013. There's going to be fun times for the next 2 years !!

Hopefully by the time this one falls the new roof going on the house will be complete.

Wouldn't it be easier to wait until a bit of satellite crashes through, THEN put a new roof on?

I rather any hot bits land on shingles instead of 80yr old exposed wood. The roofers started 9.15 and its not done yet. I have some doubt that they will finish before this bit of space junk falls.

Yippee!!! Our next "It's falling!" partee is this weekend, sometime between Saturday and Monday.

Our host this time is a satellite. Unlike the UARS, large pieces of this one are likely to survive re-entry, including a 1.5 ton mirror.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...-nasa-science/

I suggest stocking up on copious amounts of adult beverages. Hard hats and dress optional.

Another interesting example of lack of foresight, and forgetting the simple concept of "what goes up, must come down". One would think, at a certain point, the aerospace designers would incorporate some sort of last-minute booster system that would propel these larger satellites/space stations OUT of orbit at the end of their useful life, or at least to a higher orbit thus allowing more time/distance to break up and burn up on re-entry.
I've read the ISS will get retired soon...so I'm sure in a few years (decades?) we'll be expecting that big bastard to come raining down on our collective heads.

Oh good!! Maybe we can start a pool on where it is going to land. That's assuming that the Germans will be better at locating its pieces than America was.....

According to the article, the excuse for not doing that basically boils down to the fact that it was designed in the 80's and back then, so long ago, people thought space was just soooooo big.

It was the 80's man.

Ltow spins a globe, waves finger in air and plunks down in an approximate trajectory of a run-away satellite on . . . Cape Verde.

Moves all money on the roulette wheel to 00.

Do you have any history of being an accurate Psychic, Ltow?

If you do, I might want to pick a spot up the path from Cape Verde!

Why yes I do - I have a latent talent for picking the line that will take the longest for me to get through when I am at the grocery! It is spooky.

Ltow, I think this pass is your best chance to be right about Cape Verde.

But the altitude isn't falling fast enough, so unless it stays up there for quite awhile longer, you should probably stick to the slowest line thing.

Where is everyone? I've got my beer (a nice Cream Ale from Sun King, a local Indy brewery), and I've got tracking up, but nobody to speculate with. C'mon, hardhatters!

ROSAT just passing over the middle of Argentina at 10:49 EDT...

With the number of them buggers up there in decaying orbits I'm sure we will all have the opportunity to get whacked sometime soon.
