Default Verizon: $2 to pay bill

Quick Note: Verizon Readies $2 "Convenience Fee" for Online, Phone Payments

Customers can avoid the fee if they setup AutoPay or use ACH payments

If it isn't the banks trying to nickel and dime consumers, there's always some other industry that’s willing to step up to plate and milk customers for a few extra dollars every month. Today, we learn that the largest wireless carrier in the United States, Verizon Wireless, is going to start implementing a $2 convenience fee on payments made over the phone and even online.

You're kidding me?

Here, companies fall over themselves trying to get you to pay online - it's easier & faster. We do our banking & bill paying online & it was dirt simple to set up & has never caused us a moment's grief.

Next month, look for a 'convenience fee' to pay by check or in cash.

LOVELIEST of trees, the cherry now / Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride / Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten, / Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score, / It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom / Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go / To see the cherry hung with snow.

My mortgage company charges a $15 pay by phone fee and then sends me a check for $15 saying they can not except any amounts paid besides amount due unless pre-authorized by them.

Most outfits want to avoid the labor and expense of having to send hard copy bills in the mail. Not long ago, Puget Sound Energy suddenly refused to allow me to pay online unless I signed up for e-billing so they didn't have to mail a bill; I have been paying online for some months. Heck, it's hard enough for me to keep track of the bill I receive in the mail; I'd never keep track of one e-mail in many. So I mail them a check every two months, and they enjoy the labor of handling and processing it.

I've been paying Verizon online, each time as a "one time transaction," no automatic payments. If they start charging me $2 to do so, then I'll be mailing a check. They'll just get their money a little later.

I'm not so sure they can charge you extra just for receiving your bill in the mail the old fashioned way. After all, they'd be discriminating against people like my parents, who have no internet access.

The other cellphone providers must be laughing their heads off, and gleefully anticipating a rise in sales at Verizon's expense.

Not citing the outrage of customers, sneers of the general public, and collective loud laughter from their competitors.

Not to mention that there's a significant movement of people, including myself and DH, pledging to opt for paper billing with detailed statements. The cost to Verizon for that would be greater than what they'd earn from this BS "convenience fee".
