Wow - I just spent a fascinating half hour looking at this class of ships. Completely new to me & they sound like they could have a lot of roles in today's modern warfare of all types.

I dont have a problem w Giffords but this smells like kiss butt PR.
Other than be hot before she was shot what has she done that other Representatives havent.

This choice of ship names is definitely political pandering, and does not reflect Navy tradition.

Ok, her husband was a Naval Officer, combat veteran and Astronaut. She, as a military spouse, stood by her husband while he continued to uphold the finest Naval traditions, including supporting him in his final trip to space, where his performance again shown brightly on the U.S. Navy, from a hospital bed. It might be political pandering, but it also a testament to the courage shown by the spouses of members of the U.S. Naval Service.
Yeah, its a stretch, but I do think that having a ship named after a spouse is a good idea.
