Default Meth lab in nursing home causes fire

Who the hell would put a meth lab IN a nursing home?

"Fire officials: Meth lab caused Ashtabula nursing home fire that killed one"

Quote:
"A methamphetamine lab started a deadly fire at an Ashtabula nursing home Sunday night, officials say.

The fire happened at the Parkhaven Nursing Home on Park Avenue at about 8:40 p.m. because of a meth lab in room 18, the Ashtabula Fire Department said.

Firefighters said there was heavy smoke, but little fire coming from a room on the second floor of the building.

...Five people were taken from the nursing home by ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center, according to the fire department. Two people were treated and released at the scene.

One person who was later taken to the MetroHealth Medical Center burn unit died as a result of the fire Monday morning.

The criminal investigation into the fire is ongoing."

I read this earlier:
http://health.yahoo.net/news/s/nm/sp...kers-go-unpaid

Makes me wonder if a meth lab in Room 18 would keep the workers paid....

The fire and explosion threat was bad enough, but the ongoing toxic contamination could well have led to the early death of some of the patients.

An updated article says that the fatality was a 31 year old man who was not a resident of the nursing home. It didn't specify if he was an employee.

Either way, one can only hope that he's the cretin that set up the lab. If so, justice would be at least partly served by his death.

Quote:
"...Once the smoke cleared, and investigators started looking into what caused the fire, they were stunned by what they found.

“When we first started to get the indications, we all sort of looked at each other and went, ‘You know, are we seeing what we think we’re seeing?’ ” said Pristera.

The cause, according to fire investigators, was a secret methamphetamine lab in one of the rooms.

...The chief says investigators are still trying to determine who created the meth lab, creating a deadly danger for residents and employees.

“This is unchartered territory for us, and I imagine about everybody else,” he said.

Unless it's a very unusual place, everyone working there KNEW about it.

We have storage rooms that are off-limits to employees at work. If the bosses were ok with something like that, it would be easy to keep from other employees I think. I have no idea if there would be any kind of smell that others would notice though, never having been near something like that AFAIK.

Some new details from the local Ashtabula newspaper, The Star Beacon:

Quote:
"...Shaun Warrens, 31, of Ashtabula was reported dead.

Three men, who were reportedly “engulfed in flames,” were among five transported by ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center, and two other people were treated and released at the scene, according to a nurse at the scene, police and an Ashtabula Fire Department report.

Warrens was sent to MetroHealth Burn Care Center in Cleveland, but succumbed to his injuries Monday morning, according to the fire department’s report.

Drug charges are pending against two of the other men who were burned in the fire, Police Chief Robert Stell said.

Police are not releasing any names until charges have been filed and the men have been arraigned in Municipal Court, he said.

...Nurse Deanna Bigley said she saw two or three men engulfed in flames in the room. She said they were visitors.

...Stell said the three men that police believe were aware of the meth lab were two visitors and one Park Haven resident. He would not expand on the information because it’s an ongoing criminal investigation."

Wouldn't it be funny if . . .
the "resident" was their old chemistry teacher in high school.

Life imitating art.
