I have assumed for many, many years now that we are all being tracked just because we are an active member of a site like this.

Just like the stock market, it is not about reality. It is about perception. The alphabet agencies need enemies to justify their jobs. Apparently the real ones, like al Qaeda, are not enough, so we have been unknowingly and unwillingly recruited to be 'a threat to our nation'.
