I think the best thing is to study foraging as a hobby ahead of time. There are so many wonderful, easily identified food plants that can be added to your diet. The best part is they are free! I read a colonial diary once that talked about how sad it was seeing people starving when there was so much food available around them.

If you were lost in a strange area I can understand how helpful edibility testing information would be. Good stuff to know.

I can't agree with that universal edibility test. You only need to flunk that once...

Remember "Into the Wild?"

I have to agree with BG. Learn what you need to know about plants ahead of time. You don't want to have to do the edibility testing when you are half starved, and liable to make judgment mistakes due to panic, and/or low blood sugar.

I also recommend some doctor supervised practice fasting. It's good to know how your body reacts without food, so you don't get panicked too quickly. Most people won't drop dead from a 3 week fast for example, but will often have "killer" headaches during the first couple of days.
