Default Why does my indoor plant have gnats in the dirt?

I have several indoor plants. I take care of them well. But for some reason one of them always has these little bugs crawling around in the dirt and then a bunch flying around the plant....they look like gnats. And it really bothers me because I hate bugs and dont want the nasty things flying around my house!!

Welcome jemshkoj! You might mixing up a little soapy water in a spritz bottle and give it a good drenching. You can also mix a few drops of vegetable oil (or Neem oil) with it for a stronger effect. Otherwise I would suggest repotting the plant in fresh soil. Wash the plant's roots right down to the bare root and spritz with your soapy water/oil mixture before repotting in a fresh pot. Take the old pot (and underliner) and old soil out of the house. If you want to keep the pot, soak it in a bleach/vinegar solution and let it air dry completely.

I get the same thing but every time I try to get rid of them I "kill" a plant... just give up and live with "bugs"

Fungus gnats are ubiquitous to houseplants. They are annoying. They also practice parthenogenesis, so they can reproduce ALL the time and don't even need to mate.

Regular doses of half strength malathion in your watering mixture will get rid of them..,

Much more effective than the soapy water thing.

The soapy water will only get rid of the ones that you contact with the solution. THe larvae, eggs, and pupae will survive in the soil pretty well through any soapy drenchings you give them.
