I certainly believe it can trigger a period of worse symptoms. I've seen that in any number of people. And if my 'brain power' lately is any indication, (high stress life right now), I'll be gibbering & barely able to remember my own name within a few years.

I'm with you on that, CS.
But I also think that other factor increase the chances of a person developing a form dementia. Genetics play a role; IMO it does seem to show a pattern of affecting some families more than others (not sure if there's a gender link, as well) ....... Lifestyle, closed brain injury, which may not have to be any one life threatening event, but even repeated, milder traumas, as examples.
Also maybe how individuals deal with or cope with stress. Those who internalize it, those who dull it with drink or drugs, those who 'work it out' through serious physical exercise. Example: Maybe a person who runs and get's that 'runner's high', help counteract negative impacts on the brain?

I was going to comment on this, but I have to go water the TV first.

One of the hospitals I worked in had a dementia unit and they did an entry survey to see if there was any link between employment and dementia. What they found was that for females it happenes mostly in teachers and in males it's mostly in farmers. This was about 12 years ago.

Interesting correlations there - I can see the strersses in both occupations but equivalent stress loads if not far worse, can be found in many jobs.

My bet it's not just the stress but how the body reacts to it. That varies...some people love a certain level of stress and thrive...others fall over in a heap.
I hate stress....

The only reason their office assistant and I could think of was dealing with all the kids for the women and being out in the heat on the tractor for the men. The age group they were dealing with at the time were in their 70 and older and had been through the depression.

I wonder how that works now as studies show that a high percentage of people change careers several times in their working life.

That would be interesting to see what the main occupations are or how the varried ones affect it. When the ones that are 20 something now hit the age for dementia I wonder what that will show. I also wonder about the snowflakes, if working causes dementia are they safe?
