My father lost an eye and spent his childhood severely deformed due to a cherry bomb set off by his cousins that flew across his back yard and hit his face. He was only 7. Advances in plastic surgery during WWII all but eliminated the scars. You could only see faint pink lines when he was mad. lol... that was our signal he was mad.
We've had a few odd ones this year.
Elderly man injured by falling bullet as he watched a fireworks display:
Richard J. Smeraldo, 74, was watching the fireworks display with his wife and friends near the Safety Harbor Spa and Marina at around 9:45 p.m. when he felt something hit him in the face. Deputies said Smeraldo first thought he had been hit by a rock, but one of his friends found a bullet on the blanket next to her.* That was when Smeraldo realized he had been hit by the bullet.
Smeraldo was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital by ambulance.* Investigators said they determined the bullet went through the bill of Smeraldo's cap and into the bridge of his nose, then out his right nostril and through part of his bottom lip and his lower chin. The bullet then hit a metal medallion Smeraldo was wearing on a chain around his neck, then bounced off his friend's back and landed on the blanket.

Our local fireworks display was cancelled:
According to a Pasco County Fire Department official, a 49-year-old man was working with the display when a mortar firework exploded right out of its launch tube just seconds into the show in the Pasco County Fairgrounds at 36722 State Road 52.
The man was treated immediately for severe burns to his upper body by emergency crews already on hand for the event. He was conscious as he waited for and was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital's Burn Unit. The man's wife was at the event and en route to the hospital to be with him, the officials said.

Then there was the man who blew off his thumb:
The front yard of a Tampa home is littered with used fireworks and the end of the driveway is stained with blood.
According to Tampa Police, Matthew Lewandowski, 24, of Riverview, was setting off a mortar firework in a fiberglass tube at a home in the 4100 Fairview Heights W. in Tampa when it exploded in his hand early Wednesday morning.
Police said he expected the mortar to "lift off and explode in the sky." Instead, his left thumb was blown off and he sustained serious burns to his forearms, stomach and a leg.

Mike and I watched fireworks set off from houses around the lake... and a huge bonfire that grew out of control and lit up a few trees and the garage of a house. That was even more interesting than the fireworks in the sky.
