Default 500 Million People Lifted Out Of Poverty In Five Years

Missed this when it first came out.

Free markets work. Pity some have forgotten that in the US.

There are lots of people here who would take advantage of Free Markets legally if the red tape weren't so daunting. I think the drive to squeeze every penny out of would be business owners through regulation has just about tipped the scale into the realm of prohibition. I think we're going to see the black market soar...garage sale anyone?

It's hard to imagine thinking people who survive on $1.26-$2.00 per day have been lifted out of poverty.

Give up what you have and try living on $1.26/day for a few years and I bet *you* could.

I think of poverty as not enough food.

I suppose I could go Maslow and look at food, clothing and shelter as needed for life.

But a lot of the world does not really need much clothing or shelter. Not like we have it in the USA.

So I really like the concept of food as the standard of real poverty.

Although I'll give points toward poverty if you live where not enough clothing in winter = can die. And same with shelter.

I remember as a kid hearing how people had lived: no ac, no electricity, hand pump wells, growing own food, mending clothing over and over etc. And I knew I was not living like that so never felt poor-except for once...when dad's check had not come in the mail (he was working away from home, mailed his checks home) and mom had not been to the store. I was soooo hungry it kept waking me at night.

The thought that large numbers of people felt that most nights was an awful thought that has stayed with me.

That must have been what caused the Arab Spring Revolutions last year ?
cyclonic winds from all the people being "lifted" from the depths of poverty

I think its all relative.

It would be interesting to see if we can find out what that lifestyle is like.

There are some educated teacher in rural China who make RMB1,000 or about US$150/month.
