CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama's White House chief of staff apologized to Arab-Americans on Thursday for remarks his father made to an Israeli newspaper.
Last week, Benjamin Emanuel talked about his son Rahm Emanuel's new job and told the Israeli daily Ma'ariv that "obviously he'll influence the president to be pro-Israel. Why wouldn't he? What is he, an Arab? He's not going to be mopping floors at the White House."
That prompted an outcry from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, which called on Rahm Emanuel, who is Jewish, to condemn the "unacceptable smear."
On Thursday, Rahm Emanuel called the group's president, Mary Rose Oakar, to apologize on behalf of his family.
"These are not the values upon which I was raised or those of my family," the group quoted him as saying.
Oakar said the apology was accepted.
Emanuel spokesman Nick Papas confirmed the phone call and said Emanuel "offered to meet with representatives of the Arab-American community at an appropriate time in the future."

What did he say that was objectionable? He said that his son wasn't Arab. What's the problem with that?

rc, I believe some have interpreted this comment to mean Arabs are a lower class of people that are normally found in menial jobs:

I took it to mean:
1. He wasn't Arab, which implies that he wouldn't automatically take the Arab side of Arab-Israeli conflicts
2. He had the ear of the president, rather than a menial job.
IMHO, the two statements weren't linked.
People are too thin-skinned these days (but I apologize in advance to anyone with a medical condition affecting their skin).

rc, I can read it both ways, but only one seems to fit the description of a smear, so that's what I offered up.
Your last line deserves to be a sig.

Rahm's dad sounds like a crusty old bastard from the days of the Palmach. It is not difficult to develop a serious contempt for people who have been bound and determined to eradicate you and all of your people. The Arabs are quick to give offense, and even quicker to take it, so screw 'em.
