the following site has plenty of free programmes and all of them are checked and supposedly risk-free:

I like Ccleaner, does a good registry clean for the non geek.

It also cleans cookies in no time at all and you can select those you don't want cleared so you won't have to sign in to your favorite sites every time.

In 2 years of using Ccleaner first I NEVER got anything on scans with Adalert, Spybot, or AVG Anti spyware and it only takes a minute for Ccleaner to work.

I actually use ccleaner AND glary utilities (i found both through cnet). They sometimes catch things that the other one misses. Glary is great and has many other features, like an optimizer and free space wipe, that are very useful!

I would stay away from registry cleaners. Registry cleaning programs are pointless and potentially harmful. They frequently cause instability, and do not speed up your system. No registry cleaner program is smart enough to perfectly screen the tens of thousands of registry entries from programs written by millions of different software engineers.

Try it for yourself. Choose some benchmarks, like timing how long it takes your system to boot up, and how long it takes games and your browser to start up. Use your favorite registry cleaner, then repeat. You will find no difference.

Registry cleaners are good for fixing or removing broken commands and shortcuts but they have their limitations.
They are certainly not a cure-all as so many tend to believe.

I agree with 06. I used one a couple of years ago and got a can-not-boot-windows-destroyed-reinstall-windows-and re-install-all your-programmes-crash. Never again.

I also agree with O6 and Ter. Registry cleaners can't possibly know of ALL the tweaks installed.

Personally, I clean my registry BY HAND when needed. (But neither is that saying I've NEVER broken anything.., ) Okay, okay!! Call me a geek..,

It's unlike The Microsoft people to host a site of other peoples work.

1st of all, I don't know anything about Computers. And second, I highly recommend the Autorun utility program. It's the number 2 of the top 10 downloads. Its very small and doesn't install its code so doesn't need to be UNinstalled! I like that.
other's comments and opinions appreciated.

The Sysinternals web site was created in 1996 by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell to host their advanced system utilities and technical information. Microsoft acquired Sysinternals in July, 2006. Whether you’re an IT Pro or a developer, you’ll find Sysinternals utilities to help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and applications. If you have a question about a tool or how to use them, please visit the Sysinternals Forum for answers and help from other users and our moderators.

AutoRuns for Windows v9.37

By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell

Published: December 19, 2008

Introduction

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other accounts configured on a system. Also included in the download package is a command-line equivalent that can output in CSV format, Autorunsc.

You'll probably be surprised at how many executables are launched automatically!

Screenshot

Usage

See the November 2004 issue of Windows IT Pro Magazine for Mark's article that covers advanced usage of Autoruns . If you have questions or problems, visit the Sysinternals Autoruns Forum.

Simply run Autoruns and it shows you the currently configured auto-start applications as well as the full list of Registry and file system locations available for auto-start configuration.

Autostart locations displayed by Autoruns include logon entries, Explorer add-ons, Internet Explorer add-ons including Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), Appinit DLLs, image hijacks, boot execute images, Winlogon notification DLLs, Windows Services and Winsock Layered Service Providers. Switch tabs to view autostarts from different categories.

To view the properties of an executable configured to run automatically, select it and use the Properties menu item or toolbar button. If Process Explorer is running and there is an active process executing the selected executable then the Process Explorer menu item in the Entry menu will open the process properties dialog box for the process executing the selected image.

Navigate to the Registry or file system location displayed or the configuration of an auto-start item by selecting the item and using the Jump menu item or toolbar button.

To disable an auto-start entry uncheck its check box. To delete an auto-start configuration entry use the Delete menu item or toolbar button.
Select entries in the User menu to view auto-starting images for different user accounts.

More information on display options and additional information is available in the on-line help.

Autorunsc is the command-line version of Autoruns.

Almost everything that Microsoft sells is someone else's work. They destroy companies, then aquire them and their technology. From your own post:

That being said, it does look like they have some interesting stuff there.

That Sysinternals thing looks interesting indeed. One of my friends wants to know if trying to download or install those utilities will make Microsoft check if the Windows used on my, sorry, his computer, is genuine or not. M$ does these things.

Anyone ?
