Tsunami alert issued after strong Indonesian quake
15 minutes ago

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Authorities and witnesses say a strong earthquake in eastern Indonesia has sent panicked residents running outside.

The country's meteorology and seismology agency warned that with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 it was strong enough to cause a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of giant waves.

It struck at 2:43 p.m. EST, around 85 miles off of Manokwari, Irian Jaya, at a depth of about 6 miles.

Hasim Rumatiga, a local health official, said electricity went off and residents ran to higher ground.

Indonesia straddles a chain of faultlines and volcanoes known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to seismic activity.

A huge quake off western Indonesia caused the 2005 Asian tsunami that killed around 230,000 people.

Could be a bad one. It was either just onshore or just offshore.

Tsunami warning locally have been cancelled. Alaska and Pacific Tsunami alerts were not issued(?).

Hotel collapses in Indonesian earthquake

From correspondents in Manokwari, Indonesia | January 04, 2009

Article from: Agence France-Presse

A HOTEL in Indonesia's West Papua province collapsed when the second of two powerful earthquakes hit the region today and three people were pulled alive from the rubble, officials said.

The three guests who had been staying at the Mutiara hotel in the city of Manokwari were taken to hospital, but their condition was not immediately clear.

No other hotel staff or guests were believed to be trapped or missing.

"Those three hotel guests returned to their room after the first big quake. They failed to evacuate after the second powerful quake struck and got trapped in the hotel rubble," a hotel staffer identified as Harun told AFP.

"The three have been brought to a nearby hospital. But it's not clear what injuries they suffered," he added.

He said the hotel had failed to withstand the quake as it was old but that other buildings in the neighbourhood had received only minor damage such as cracks to the walls.

The two powerful earthquakes have rattled Indonesia's West Papua province this morning, triggering panic among residents.

The first 7.6-magnitude quake struck at 4.43 am (6:43am AEDT), about 150km northwest of the city of Manokwari, the US Geological Survey said, triggering a tsunami alert that was later withdrawn.

It was followed almost three hours later at 22:33 GMT (9:33am AEDT) by a 7.5-magnitude aftershock, the US agency said.

Both quakes were fairly shallow, with the first hitting at a depth of 35km and the second at 45km.

Distressed residents ran out of their homes as the quake rattled Manokwari, the seaside capital of the province, but there were no immediate signs of heavy damage or injuries, an AFP correspondent in the town said.

Thousands of residents including children and the elderly could be seen thronging the roads of the town in the darkness of a blackout and heading away from the sea despite the tsunami warning being lifted.

Little damage could be seen initially in the town apart from cracked walls.

"The quake was quite strong and we felt it for about three minutes. The electricity blacked out after the quake," a policeman who identified himself as Ketut said.

"The police and military are working right now to help people get to higher ground due to the tsunami alert and the fact that we're on the coast," he said.

Several smaller aftershocks were also reported in the hours following the first quake, Indonesian seismologists said.

Indonesia, which sits at the meeting of continental plates, is frequently hit by earthquakes and tsunamis.

The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, which was triggered by a massive quake off the coast of Indonesia, killed at least 168,000 people in the country's Aceh province and Nias island.

Quake hits Indonesia's Papua island, four dead

Sun Jan 4, 2009 2:32am GMT

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A series of quakes off the northern coast of the Indonesian island of Papua early on Sunday killed four people and injured several others, officials and local television said.

The quake triggered a small tsunami that hit the Japanese coast but there was no damage, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. The Indonesian authorities also issued a tsunami warning for Papua, but lifted it shortly afterwards.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said a magnitude 7.6 quake occurred some 150 km (95) miles) northeast of Manokwari in the Indonesian half of the island of Papua, at a depth of 35 km (21.7 miles). An official at Indonesia's meteorology agency said there were several quakes in the area during the night.

Priyadi Kardono, spokesman for the disaster management centre, said that the health ministry had confirmed four deaths from the quakes. Metro TV reported that six people had been hospitalised.

Kardono said that buildings had been damaged and power supplies cut in the area. Hotel Mutiara in Manokwari was damaged, with one of the three buildings in the complex flattened, he said.

A key Indonesian energy venture, the BP-led liquified natural gas (LNG) Tangguh project, is near the area affected by the quakes, but a BP spokesman said there had been no significant impact on the operations.

"There is no significant impact only a crack in the office building. The work continues," Nico Kanter told Reuters, adding that employees at the Tangguh operations had felt the tremblors.

BP's Tangguh project includes an operating site in Bintuni Bay, which is about 100 km south of Manokwari, as well as offices in Babo, Sorong, Manokwari, Bintuni and Fak Fak, according to its web-site.

This remote part of Papua is popular with tourists because of its diving sites and wild life, including birds of paradise.
