2013: Another Season Begins

Posted 03-31-2013 at 05:58 AM by CanadaSue

Masybe this year I'll actually manage to keep this up to date... but I'm not holding my breath. I expanded the flower border last year & this is the 1st spring for the new section. I'm nervous about how well it will have overwintered which is ridiculous because I planted things I know - many of them transplants from other sections of the garden. It will be FINE.

We had a more traditional winter - a good 2 months of consistant snow cover & the border was heavily mulched with a good 6-8" of grass clippings & chopped leaves. That packed down to about 2-3" under the weight of snow & ice but seems to have done its job. SO removed the bulk of it for me yesterday as I was a bit sick - I'd given it a good start in the last few days.

Today I'll be having a good look at what's there. Right now, I see tons of spring bulbs poking through - crocus, reticulated Iris, daffs & tulips. I think some anemone bulbs are coming as well as grape hyacinth. I did catch a peek of some fresh green among the perennials - the covering kept some green above the ground. I'm hoping that will translate to an earlier start for both fresh growth & flowers.

I've got more photos to take & post.

Plans for April include removing some plants that don't really work, thinning out some others, (have homes for all of them), adding some specimen plantings from a loooooong wish list as they become available & I will try to do a rational inventory. I also have to add some composted manure, re-edge & trim out a few dead stalks I let stay to mark plant locations.
