Default China builds a mega-city larger than Britain with over 100 million people

Quote:
Nation combines its capital with nearby cities to form a 'megatropolis'
The region would cover 83,403 square miles and have 100 million people
Rail network has been planned to realise a 'one-hour commute zone'
Another mega-city is forming in southern China with 64 million residents

The mega-city, 137 times the size of London, is set to consolidate
Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei

It will make LA in Blade Runner seem like a small town.

They could populate 14 cities that size.

http://www.worldometers.info/world-p...on-by-country/

Given current population growth they will need 28 cities that size by 2060.

I suspect there is not enough land for that rate of expansion. Then what?

It's not quite that dire. China is growing at roughly 30 million/decade right now. So that puts them at about 1.5 billion by 2060. In fact, current predictions are that China will start shrinking sometime in the mid-2030s after topping out around 1.4 billion.

India is the scary one: 2 billion by 2060 at current rates! Even with predicted slowing it will hit 1.8 billion.

Been suggested to me before that global population rate will decrease but cannot see where or how. Have noticed that economically active countries seem to be slowing down but no sign at all from countries not doing so well.

The more economically successful a nation becomes the more expensive having children becomes.

If the whole planet manages to reach a First World standard of living we'll go extinct.

China has the same looming problem that Japan and many EU countries have -- a rapidly aging population. Coupled with female infanticide (which has lowered their birthrate even more), this means they are headed for a train wreck. Definitely not out of control growth.
