Default Are smartphones making us dumb?

Students given iPhones to help with their studies used them for social media instead
Quote:
Psychologists gave free phones to students to help them get better grades
However, they mainly used them to check Facebook and listen to music
A year later, half the students admitted the devices distracted them
Psychologists said students need guidance on how to best use technology

In an experiment, pupils who were given a free iPhone used it for social networking and listening to music rather than helping with their studies, and they admitted being distracted from their work.

The year-long experiment has led psychologists to conclude that students need constant guidance when using technology.

Psychologists at Rice University in Houston Texas wanted to see if the latest mobile technology would be used by the students to improve their learning.

They hoped they would use the handsets to look up information, watching tutorials and joining academic discussions, for example.

When given their new handsets, the students overwhelmingly said that the devices would help them do better in tests and get better grades without being a distraction.

But a year later, the experts discovered the opposite was true.

Lead author of the study, psychology professor Philip Kortum, said: ‘I was surprised.
So educated, so intelligent, yet so dumb.

Not the students, but the researchers!

When I was in college for the last time (as opposed to 2001 which was wildly different with technology) the young people were glued to some kind of device. Me? I used my laptop/PC to look at PLoS articles, find images, type out reports/essays etc. I handwrote a lot and used (gasp) dead tree books lol.
