Default Blood Levels of Ebola are Predictive of Death

Not a shocking result, but nice to have a study from a large sample to help set the ranges.

Ebola virus load in blood helps predict risk of death from infection

Scientists aim to understand link between blood levels of the virus and risk of death to assess treatments

The levels of Ebola virus in the blood can strongly predict a patient's risk of death, a new study suggests.

An international team of researchers analyzed data on 699 people in Guinea with confirmed Ebola who were hospitalized in Conakry, Guinea between March 2014 and February 2015.

They aimed to better understand the link between blood levels of the virus and risk of death to assess potential treatments, after taking into account factors such as age and time between when symptoms started and samples were collected.

The study's authors estimated death rates were 21 per cent among those with low blood levels of the virus, 53 per cent among those with medium levels, and 81 per cent among those with high levels.

Those younger than 5 and older than 45 had higher death rates compared to patients ages 15 to 44, Amadou Alpha Sall from Institut Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal and Simon Cauchemez from Institut Pasteur in Paris and their co-authors reported in Tuesday's issue of PLOS Medicine, published by the Public Library of Science.

The case fatality ratio or death rate is the proportion of deaths from the disease to total cases.
