Default Hard to bear

My sister lives in central Georgia now after moving down from the northern Virginia DC metro area. These last several days she's been having trouble with a "nuisance animal", namely a black bear!

Day before yesterday morning my brother in law went outside where he noticed that their car was setting funny so he walked over to investigate where he found *three* flat tires! Something had also turned over a cooler full of Gatorade and scattered them about.

At first he thought this was vandalism until he noticed unmistakable large paw prints and places that looked like something's wet nose had touched the glass. Didn't take long to determine it had to be a bear, but why on Earth would it bite their tires? He called the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, but no one came out before the end of the day.

Last night my sister had just gotten out of the shower and was putting on lotion when she heard a scratching sound behind her at the window. The blinds were up maybe about six inches (window on backside of house out in the country) so when she turned around to look she saw the bear peeking in at her! Quickly discovered doorknobs are really hard to turn when one's hands are covered in lotion!

My brother in law went outside to put their car headlights on the animal and fire a round of birdshot in the air to run him off while my sister called the sheriff. The bear didn't go far (they have photos) so it didn't take long for the deputies to find him. DNR came out and set traps. Bears are protected so they didn't want to just shoot it.

Still can't figure out why it would attack their tires unless they'd driven through something that smelled really attractive.

Ahh, the country life...

Having the pictures brings it out of the realm of "just something that happened to a relative" & emphasizes just how BIG these suckers are.

Glad he was caught before inflicting any more damage or worse - injury.

Yes, the ranger was surprised at his size as well. Seems to be a young bear. They didn't say if it was male or female. It's going to be relocated. Peeping Toms are not wanted! (laughing)

I still can't figure out what possessed it to bite through three tires.

I couldn't help but wonder what was on the other side of that window!

That is their bathroom window. My sister had just gotten out of the shower when she noticed the bear peeking in.
